I know that's a really bummer. I bought registry mechanic for 30 or 40 bucks.
I think you can run a trial program once, free! But, I think it's not a full
scan of your PC for free. That's probably why I bought mine. For an extra
10 bucks, they sent the CD. I can run it on any PC now as long as I have the
Product Key #'s. If you don't pay the 10 bucks for the actual CD. I don't
think you can run it on other PCs, but maybe you can as long as you have your
product key numbers. Maybe it's just convenient to have the CD on you and be
able to burn another one and put the Product Key #'s right on the disc. As
far as where to get registry mechanic, just type in at Ask-For or Dog Pile or
Ask Jeeves, that you want to get your registry fixed. I see advertisements in
PC Magazine all the time about it.
Ok, good luck!
Thanks, attilathehun1

Hmm, if you're doing that from the Recovery Console, it should work. What
exactly is the error message you are getting? You can not run it from a
command prompt within windows; it must be done in the recovery console.

Please provide the exact error message.

Did you try this one?

"copy c:\WINNT\system32\config\system c:\WINNT\tmp\system.bak"
