Need for more Video memory?????

P

PattiChati

I just got the game "desperate housewives" and it won't install, saying my
computer does not have enough video memory or video acceleration. It
requires 63 mgs and I guess my computer only has 60? I don't know anything
about this and am not a gaming person. I just want to play this game.
Is the only way to play this is to get another video card? I contacted the
mfr of my computer and the card I need is around $70. Seems senseless for 1
game.
Is this the only way to do this?
Also, will increasing the video memory and playing games mess up my
computer? I have read reviews on this memory card and there was not much
good to say about it.
As I said, I no nothing of this sort of thing and don't know if I should
mess around with it.
What do you think?
Thanks.

If your video sub-system is part of the motherboard then you must read the
motherboard manual to see if you can allocate more system memory to the
video sub-system - else a new video card is required.

Hi PattiChati,

Like you, I had to install a video card in my computer to play
my favorite game (Halo) and I haven't regretted it one bit.

I have had no problems with my video card, and don't know
of anyone who has had problems because they installed one.

Hope you make the right decision. :)

Thank you. Do I get the video card my computer mfr suggested, or is getting
one off ebay okay? What would you recommend?

Hi PattiChati,

Your best bet would be to visit your local computer shop
with your game package that lists the requirements, and the
manufacturer's suggestion to get a reasonably priced 64MB
NVIDIA GeForce 3 or better DirectX 9-compatible card.
installed by them in your PC with up to date drivers. :)

Okay, this is what I was told to get - JATON VIDEO-208PCI-64Twin GeForce
MX4000 64MB 64-bit DDR PCE Low Profile Video Card with L-P Bracket. When I
look this up the reviews are horrible on it. I went to newegg.com. I want
it for my computer - would that make a difference on the reviews. I am
really afraid to do this with such bad revies. What do you think?

Avoid cards with MX in their title. The GeForce 4 MX, is in many ways less
powerful than the GeForce 3.

What video card do you have at the moment?

go to

Device Manager
expand (click on +) beside DISPLAY ADAPTER
should list the display adapter.

I cannot find out what video card I have right now. How do I find that out.
Gateway is the one that told me to get the below card. After I find out
what video card I have, can you tell me which one to get? Thanks

Hi PattiChati,

Here are a few ways to identify which video card you have
installed on your computer.

1. Click Start / Run / type: dxdiag
Click the Display Tab
Look under Device for the name and manufacturer

2. Click Start / (Settings) Control Panel
Click Display
Click the Settings Tab
Click the Advanced... button
Click the Adapter Tab

3. Click Start / Run / type: msinfo32
Click on the + Components
Click on Display to see the name on the right

4. Use Belarc to see indentify your Video, Chipset and Motherboard:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1385.html

5. Get the information from the manufactures website (or store)

6. Look on the Video card itself if you plug into a card, or

7. Look in your Motherboard manual if you plug into the
on board video built into the motherboard of your computer.

Hope that helps you identify the make and model of your video card,
and afterwards, Try updating your Video drivers using these steps:
http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html#drivers Good Luck! :)
