Need access to old Windows 3.1 Cardfile

J

J. Timothy

I have a cardfile created under windows 3.1, and then later accessed under
Win95 and Win98SE. But, I am now running Windows XP SP2, Home Edition, and
when I click on the file I get the following error
message:C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for
running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to
terminate the application. 16 bit Windows Subsystem. Is there anything I
can do to once again be able to re-open/access this file? I tried opening
it with NotePad, but the information is completely scrambled/jumbled and
cannot be read except in bits and pieces. Thanks in advance for any help
you might provide.

Hi Tim,

See if this helps/applies:

Error Message: MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based program
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_m.htm#16bit

This installaton program will reinstall the missing or corrupt Windows XP
system files command.com, autoexec.nt and config.nt. The absence or
corruption of one or more of these files causes a "16 Bit Subsystem" error.

Also, AVAST (antivirus software) can be the cause if you
have WinXP SP2 installed:

Runs fine here in XP. You just need the executable file. Copy it from
your old files and go. If you're an old 3.1 user, I presume you know how
to make shortcuts and associate files.
