NAV 2003 CDs for sale - any good?

I need to buy an AV prog for a friend and, looking on pricewatch, I found
lots of 2003 Norton AVs
for sale in many locations for as little as $5. All claim that the program
on the CD is upgradeable for one year for free from Symantec. Is this true

There are also 2004 CDs available at $10-15 and 2005s for about $25. Why buy
a 2005, if you can upgrade the 2003?

In addition, if I already subscribe to NAV at $20/year, would Symantec allow
me to upgrade the 2003 for a year for free, or is it a cheap lure to drag in
new $20/year subscribers?

TIA

Upgradable for *free*? Yeah, Symantec always provides free upgrades for
their products for the 1st year :)>

At best, you'll get free Live-Update signature updates for a year.

Sounds too good to be true, eh? There's probably a reason for that :)>

Since when was Symantec ever a non-profit organization?

Don't take any 2003 version - they are not good. I speak from
experience with it. That version does not detect well at all compared to
the 2004 version.

Foget about the 2003 version. Go for the newer ones if you want
Symantec.

If you want to see a selection of other AV products go here:

I'm still using a Systemworks 2003 w current sub. that seems to find as
much as anything else does.

I wouldn't bother buying the later (2005) version. If I felt a need for
whatever improvement there might be I wouldn't bother with a later
Norton product, most likely use a free AVG or Avast prod.

Thanks everyone for the inputs. Gives me something to chew on ;-)
