Names in Folder

After re-installing Windows XP all the names of the files have their
extensions attached (e.g. .xls, .doc, .jpg).

I'd like to have them without but cannot find anything in the Folder view
option.

Go back and look for 'hide extensions for known file types'.

And if you have that option turned on already (which it is by default), it
means you haven't reinstalled your application (such as Microsoft Office) to
handle those file types, once you install it the extensions will be hidden.
