Name: &Address

I am constantly being asked by MS Anti-Spware if I want to allow or block the
following (quotes mine) "Name: &Address". I've run extensive searches for
information on this item, but cannot find anything. Unfortunately most
search engines don't treat a phrase as exact, and mostly what I've been
getting back is pages containing both the words name and address, including
at google advanced exact phrase search and all the web advanced search
boolean with the phrase in quotes.

Since I cannot find any info on it, I'm blocking it every time, but it comes
up constantly.

Anyone know what this is and whether or not it should be allowed or blocked?

Thanks,
Pat

Pat - are you aware of any corporate-related application that might have
this name, or something similar?

Bill,

No I am not; however I suppose that's possible. This one's got me totally
puzzled because it pops up no matter what I'm doing or what applications I
have running.

Stepping back to look at context, I see that your thread is adjacent to one
from August of 2005 with a similar content. The suggestion in that thread
was that this was a toolbar that is attempting to install in IE. I suppose
one way of dealing with this would be to let the toolbar install--i.e.
ALLOW--and then use the Tools, Advanced Tools, System Explorers to look
through the list of IE toolbars and remove whatever was added--if it turns
out not to be desirable.

Is it likely that your corporate network admins might be mandating some
toolbar via group policy? Microsoft Antispyware will allow users to block
such administrative actions--which is probably not desirable in a managed
environment.

Bill & Engel,

Well, I'm feeling like a bit of an idiot. I originally said that the item
detected was "Name: &Address". Turns out it's "&Address". I purposely
created an allowed alert in MS Anti-Spyware and noted that the description
began with "Name:" <space><name of allowed alert>. So the full name of the
item detected is "&Address". The "Name:" portion is just a label
MSAnti-Spyware is inserting in front of all alerts.

After a brief search, it appears to be a shell browser component of MS
Office, although I'm not completely positive of that yet. I also dug in to
the logs in MS Anti-Spyware and found the text of one of the alerts on this
item. Here is the text of the alert: "The user administrator, has decided
to block the Internet Explorer Shell Browser &Address () from being added to
Internet Explorer.
About Internet Explorer ShellBrowser: The Internet Explorer ShellBrowser
contains information and settings about an instance of Internet Explorer. If
these settings are modified or a new ShellBrowser is added, this ShellBrowser
can take over full control of Internet Explorer, add toolbars, menus,
buttons, etc."

If anyone knows for sure if this is a component of Office and should be
allowed, please post. Otherwise I'm going to continue blocking it until I
know for sure.

Thanks,
Pat
