XP - Search doesn't work?

Start | Search | For Files or Folders...

When I type in a wildcars spec such as *.pas for all pascal files, and enter
a phrase to search for in the file (such as "test" without the quotes),
search cannot find it. The phrase is in multiple .pas files. How could
this be? I've tested with .cpp, .h, and .txt files, and search works on
them. But not on .pas files! Why?!?!

They are not hidden or system files. They are plain text files. (Pascal) I
can create a file
in the C:\ root directory called test.pas with the word "idle" in it and
Microsoft's
search will not find it. If the file is called test.cpp or test.h, search
does finds the file/word.
I've duplicated this on two machines so far.

you don't have SP1 installed, do you?

when you ask for "search for text within the file", XP _ONLY_ looks inside
files that it "knows" about, ie ones that it has a "filter" for. Before
SP1 there were only a few filters, SP1 added many many more, and also
identifed many additional file extensions that could use the "generic"
filter.

You can perform a mod that basically says all files (*.*) can use the
generic filter.

google for it, it's out there. there is also a knowledgebase artical on
this, do a search within Help and Support when connected to the net.

Hi
After installing SP1 "search for a word or phrase" is working fine for all extensions which they specified in the above article, but what about the other extensions like *.java ? filter is not finding the .java files. It is a bug still in XP?

XP search can be tweaked, to enhance functionality. But it may be easier
to install this free, and far superior (some say) utility. Test it out...
