Mysterious Windows Folders & Files

WinXP Home

All of a sudden, and for no discernible reason, I'm seeing my C: drive start
to accumulate a strange set of folders ad files. They're all similar. The
c: root will show a folder with a gibberish name, such as:

C:\53068203d171da560ed46cbf

This folder will show a single sub-folder "Update"

The "Update folder always contains a single text file: update.log

That file contains the following:
CSetupExtension::~CSetupExtension() : Entering
CSetupExtension::~CSetupExtension() : Leaving

What's causing this. More to the point, can I just delete them?
