Just a new thing - whenever there is a reference in someones email or a message
in this group referring to some interesting place, Iexplorer jumps in and tries
to connect - trouble is the it takes forever to respond where firefox would come
up almost immediately - I have set Firefox as my default program but regardless
MS internet gets in there and is in the way - I used to have a nice peaceful
relationship with Iexplorer in - I do not use you so go asleep and that has
worked for many years - now I cannot get rid of it - please help.

When IE opens does it take you to the link in your email (or a link in
here), or does it try to take you someplace else?

Try to catch it in the address bar, or let IE finish doing what it
wants to do an see where you end up.

You need to keep IE around for some Microsoft pages that don't render
properly with Firefox (the pages work as designed of course).

There are other pages that only work with IE, but its a definite maybe
you will need it for some MS pages.

Some malware will redirect your browser or keep it from going to
certain sites, so consider this:

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these three free
malware detection programs:

Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/
SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/
AVG (AVG): http://free.avg.com/

Are you suggesting that IE automatically connects to any url mentioned
in an email? If that is the case you have a serious problem and probably
an infection of some sort of malware. If have that wrong then please
reread your post because that is what you are saying.

If, you mean that when you click on a link in an email IE tries to
connect instead of FireFox, you are probably using Outlook Express as
your mail client.

If you go to your options under tools (In Outlook Express) you will
probably find that OE is still your default browser as far is it is
concerned. Change it there.

That site ensured me that I was not having a default connection with IE or
Outlook

Yes that is correct - your URL of computer help was instantly placed in
IExplorer - in top of that it takes about 90 seconds for it to load the page.

That is not correct - I have used Eudora since I ever started with computing
with windows - the instigators for that was iinet.net.au - they are the people I
am still connected with.

probably find that OE is still your default browser as far is it is

I shall try that but I have never used Outlook express.

So now, Eudora creeps into the picture.

Are you using Eudora for email and to read the newsgroups and only
notice this behavior when using Eudora?

Try this with Eudora:

Disable the WebBrowser control to view messages, go to Tools ->
Options -> Viewing Mail, uncheck "Use Microsoft's viewer". Restart
Eudora.

If enabled, in increases your vulnerability to malware.

There are no options in Outlook Express to set a default Browser. Where did you get that idea?

I am using Free Agent for the NewsGroups. I often make use of shortcuts
generated by right clicking the background (empty spot on the screen) and then
choosing Shortcuts. Fill it in with say my Bank URL and it would come up and be
a Firefox shortcut - now it automatically becomes and Iexplorer shortcut - that
works but the time it takes to get there is about nearly 2 minutes. Just to show
how bad it has got
Now I shall look in the TaskManager - yesterday I saw that when IE was hanging
there was an exe file taking a big chunk of CPU time I shall change the name of
that file in safe mode and see what happens - yesterday I saw that the file was
there to expedite the change from one program to another - seemed to be a new
file but it was put there by MS.

Failing all else I shall bring back a C: drive stored as a Acronis backup - that
sgould get me out of trouble but - we shall then not know what happened

So, is one of your problems:

You create a new Internet Shortcut on your desktop and enter a valid
URL like www.bank.com (maybe you name the shortcut BANK).

When you double click the new Internet Shortcut from your desktop, IE
opens, but you would rather have Firefox open.

Sometime in the past, it worked okay - Firefox would open the BANK
shortcut, but now IE opens it and you don't like it.

Do you have any desktop Internet Shortcuts that work the way you want?

No I am afraid that none of them did until now - but Google is my friend and I
got to http://outlook-tips.net/archives/2004/20040923.htm and there is was. I
went in and changed a few of them to open with D:\Program Files\firefox.exe and
they now work brilliantly - so to cause all that commotion but my age does not
make thing any better
