My plan for FP2003 reinstall

This is a peculiar error, given the careful circumstances I try to keep my
environment in. I'm prone to blame these occurences on automatic updates
from MS, but it could have very well been one of the power failures we've
had recently.

I plan to eliminate all traces of FrontPage2003 using "Control Panel/Add and
Remove..." and then use the msicuu2 app -- Windows Installer Clean Up
Utility -- and then do a complete reinstall using my FP2003 upgrade disk
over my FP98 full disk.
Perhaps, after cleaning FP from my hd, I should check for any and all
patches, SP's, updates, upgrades and add them to my WinXP and Office 2003
installed files. Then reinstall FP.
Any clues? advice? suggestions? things not to do, to stay away from?

Sorry, I wasn't clear -- I need the full version disk of 98 to upgrade to
2003.

You don't need to install FP98 if the version of FP2003 that you purchase is
an upgrade version. Start the install - it will tell you it cannot find a
qualifying version - at that point, take out the FP2003 CD and put in the
FP98 CD - once it sees it, take out the FP98 CD and out the FP2003 CD back
in and it will finish the install.

Download FPCleaner from www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm and run the
routines for clearing the web cache files, and temporary files. These will
be untouched by any un-install methods you have outlined. And this may fix
your existing problem.
As Thomas said, do not install FP98 - installing this may give you even
more trouble with the PWS that comes with it, which will not run on Win XP
(and is very difficult to remove).

NO! I really don't think FP Cleaner is of any help for this problem!
and NO! I wasn't going to REinstall 98 -- I was going to use the disk to
verify as you all keep telling me.
I really and truly appreciate your help and answers, and I'm sorry I might
sound rude, but the issue is a faultless reinstall of PF2003 and the nagging
question of why it went bad in the first place. As MVP's, I'm sure you'd be
interested in closure.

FP cleaner should still be used to clear the cache and temporary files.
If the cache files are not cleared, your re-installed FrontPage will re-use
the existing (possibly corrupt) cache files , unless you have already
deleted these.

What was in your recycle bin after you ran FP Cleaner??
Did you run the function that restores the default menus and toolbars??

What is set as your default html editor in Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options >
Programs??

Alright -- this is what I did:
I ran FP Cleaner several installs ago, and the cache remained empty all
that time. Two files were sent to the Recycle Bin at that time, and I
returned my menus and toolbars back to default -- but that was a long time
ago, and nothing had changed. Two reinstalls of FP2003 still didn't solve
the problem -- I still got the error that FrontPage could not open html
files (I didn't think to try to build a new website to see what that would
do).
On the third try, I eliminated all vestiges of FrontPage, any and all
versions, eliminated all mention of it from the Registry, using all the
proper apps and cares and concerns. I rebooted twice (the first reboot can
set up files and registry information that can still interfere -- that's why
I always reboot twice, usually hard reboots).
Then, and only then, did I attempt to reinstall FP2003. When it got half
way into copying files I got the error message 1335 "Cab file F2561406 is
corrupt. I took the disk out, checked it for hairs, dirt, scratches, etc.
I saw none but gave it a swipe with a disk cleaner, put it back in and
clicked on "Retry" but it still gave me the same error message. Without
interrupting the install I checked for anything in Google having to do with
the "F2561406 is corrupt" error. I was not surprised to see many, many
install problems associated with that particular cab file and all had been
told to clean the disk or get a new one from MS.
But I've been down this road more than once: I found that the file was
readable from the disk and I was able to copy all the install files to my hd
and was able to do a clean install from there without further problem. I
proceeded to reboot (hard) twice and checked FP to see if it would let me
edit html files -- it did! I was back, and I continue to work without a
problem.
I have to think, especially with all the earlier problems others have had
installing FP2003 and getting over that particular cab file, that an early
undiscovered problem existed within FP2003 that was never addressed
adequately and has led any number of people down blind paths. And that is
what really good programmers and application developers need to be sensitive
to, and what MVP's need to be intuitive to.

No, you only need the FP98 disk so that the FP2003 install can check it
(you swap the disks during the install process) YOu don't need FP98
installed on your machine.

This suggested or implied you intended to install *over* the current FP98
install - a misunderstanding on our part.
