Import a same-name-file from local PC to folder in FP2003?

I hope the subject text is short enough, but I don't know how to tell
until after I post this.
Question: do I need to do a recalculate hyperlinks between my
import and subsequent publish of a new pdf file from
my local PC to FP2003 on my local PC before I do a
publish to my online web site?
I'm trying to import a pdf file from my local PC into a folder in my
FP2003 web. In FP2000 I just highlighted the folder in FP2000, se-
lected "import" from the file (menu), used add to select the pdf
file id on my local PC, and when it completed I did a recalculate
Hyperlinks and then a Publish for 'changed pages only'.
Since I've had problems with minor changes between FP2k and
FP2003, I tried to read to find out just what recalculate hyper-
links does in FP2003? I'm concerned because the name of this
pdf file in my FP folder does NOT change across the import,
only the contents of the file change. Is FP2003 going to know
what I've done if I don't do a recalculate all hyperlinks?
I think I'm going to love FP2003... when I get caught up I plan
to get rid of shared borders, theme, and garbage files from my
existing FP2000 web at URL www.regischurch.com .
Any help someone could provide would be appreciated.

P.S. I'm running WinXP/SP1 on a Server with FP extensions. I
have done 2 successful 'publish' runs since installing
FP2003.

When you import, you don't have to recalculate hyperlinks. To be on the safe side when importing a
file that already exist, just delete the current file first via FP and make sure the new version is
named exactly the same.

If you have IIS installed on your local PC, you really should always work local using IIS, by
opening the site in FP as http://localhost or http://localhost/webname as it really is a waste of
time to use disk-based web and then publish to IIS, and then to your remote server.

Note: However if you plan to use FP2003's Dynamic Web Templates, you stick to working with your
disk-based web, as the FP extensions do not support the auto update feature of the DWT under the
extensions.

You shouldn't "have" to calculate hyperlinks, as the hyperlinks haven't changed.

When I move new files into a web to replace those with the same file name, I either Copy in Windows
Explorer and then paste into FrontPage, or drag the file from Windows to FrontPage. That will give
you the "Do you want to replace" prompt which "normally" updates FrontPage so that it Knows what is
new and needs to be published.

I don't know what all the hoopla is with "import".
When I receive a file via email attachment, I merely save the attachment into the appropriate FP folder. I then hyperlink to it and FP sees it, uploads it and everything woiks.

Because it is the way to get external content into a FP web and ensures that FP will always update
it's hidden indexes and then publish the content.

Thank you Thomas Rowe and Thank you Steve Easton:
I really appreciate the extra information in your reply, regarding
DWT's. I do plan to use DWT's after I feel a little more comfort-
able with FP2003.

Thank you Steve Easton: I am much more familiar with Windows
Explorer and didn't know it would give me the 'Do you want to
replace' prompt so hadn't considered it as a solution... live and
learn (hopefully).

I'm dumb enough to have had a problem just generating a
new page in FP2003... took me awhile to find I had to 'turn
borders on' and reapply a theme just to get my first FP2003
'new page' and publish to run successfully. I'm going to try to get
caught up with late updates and then do some redesigning/testing
on my own to generate some new functions available with my
now current PC software products.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Trish,

Just to clarify what Steve Easton was saying about using Windows Explorer, it is not Windows
Explorer that would be generating the message, but FP when you copy and paste or drag-n-drop a file
from Windows Explorer or My Computer into your current open FP web. This is the same as using the FP
File Menu | Import function.

Hey Thomas;
I really have been reading all the Help info I could find and I
did sorta understand Steve's post. Miracle of miracles <don't
laugh>. I do appreciate the clarification. I save all the responses
I get to questions so that when I actually try the approaches in
testing, I know what I've been told. Knowing me, I'll probably
be looking for the clarification at that point and now I'll have it
<big smile, and a big thank-you>.
