I have had this computer for over 5 years now. I have gone through
numerous upgrades for the likes of...
monitors (now a decent 19 in),
sound cards (now a turtle beach Santa Cruz),
video cards (ati 9600 pro),
speakers (Altec Lansing MX5021 {GREAT speakers})
hard drives (a 40 gig and a 120 gig)
Ram (512MB)
8x dvd burner (single layer only)
The only thing that has remained constant is the cpu/motherboard
Now I know this is an ANCIENT system to many of you, but these upgrades
have kept this pc functional for many years. I can STILL play many
modern games on it, though not high end games, and certainly not with
anything turned up in terms of graphics.
But yeah, this computer is showing it's age of course, but the only
real area where it shows it's weariness is in terms of playing games,
and playing those hdtv clips on the internet. everything else still
works fine, albeit somewhat slower.
I am proud of this computer and surprised it is still so functional.
BUT everything has it's time, and soon I will retire this system, scrap
the good parts (like my speakers, and build anew)
because I waited so long my next computer will be well over 4 times
faster than my current one.
I am going amd 64 all the way, I think an amd 4000+ 64 will do nicely,
they are incredibly Fast and getting cheaper and chea[er as time goes
on. the FX-53 is the almost same as the 4000+ I think, except it can
be overclocked more. But I do not overclock my system so the added
dollars on that would be wasted. (why overclock anyway? what the hell
does the tiny benefit do for people? It's not like the speed doubles)
anyway, I am rambling, but again, the pentiums III's had a LONG life
and held their own for quite awhile.
Save graphics and games (even this can be ofset with better graphics
cards), computers are able to take on regular tasks for quite some time
now. We are getting into diminishing returns on the mundane stuff.
BUT the hdtv videos will demand more on top of the games, so to my
faithful PIII, job well done. You have done Far more than I expected
of you and you are honered.
