How much of my "needed" resources will Vista take away?

I just upgraded my PC to 3200 Ghz and 2 gb's of RAM. My grfx card is a
slightly old Nvidia 6600GT 128 mb card. I upgraded because I wanted to
use my pc to capture hdtv. I was told I would need at least a 3200ghz
cpu and 2gb's of RAM if I wanted to do this and still do little things
on the side (like maybe browse the web) at the same time. I've been
able to get along like this for awhile now without problems.

Now comes Vista. Can anyone tell me what (if any) version of Vista
will allow me to keep up this same type of performance I have with XP?
I'll put on only the Basic Vista if needed. If not I'm not upgrading
my computer again, that's the limit my motherboard will take. I might
think about upgrading my graphics card to 256mb or 512mb (I don't know
if the 512mb's cards are still expensive), otherwise I'm just sticking
to XP. Any adivise would be appreciated.

"Basic" Vista would not have the features you seem to like.
Personally - if everything is working for you now - I don't know why you'd
start running into a new door until your head busts open anyway.

If you are going Vista - I would go on a whole new system and get used to
it - considering you went to so much work to get the current situation 'just
right'. Then - when you are comfortable with Vista - consider swapping out
systems.

not knowing what capture card you have this is just a guess, there is a good
chance that Vista will not
support it.

right, I forgot about that. This capture card is not a well-known card
made by a big company. Screw vista. At least for another half to 1
year. By then hopefully it's DRM protection for hd-dvd's will also
have been hacked :) Will XP's have any trouble working with hd-dvd
players/recorders and hd-dvd's when they come out?

That would be up to said manufacturers of said devices.
When a company puts out a product - that company chooses what will be
supported and where - not Microsoft.

That's true. Since most people will be on XP when hd-dvd
players/recorders are introduced this year I would think they are
going after that market. Unless the film industry somehow forces them
to have to comply with Vista, but I would doubt that.
