So are we to understand that your pc is completely powered down, and
automatically boots himself at midnight? Or is it already on and is
doing a reboot?

If it is powered down, the only way it should be able to boot would be
from some type of wake on LAN signal\capability, i.e. another network
device is signaling it to power on. If you have a network cable
plugged in, unplug it and see what happens.

I would check your BIOS for any "wake on" settings and set them all to
off. It sounds like your lease for your internet connection expires
about the same time and the computer wakes up at the signal for the new
lease.

i tried this also disabled the same. yet the problem repeats.
yesterday the eventlog showed this ERROR MESSAGE AND ALSO THE SAME ONE
MENTIONED BELOW IN THE FIRST EMAIL.
IS THIS SOMETHING RELATED TO WIN XP SP2

*************
ERROR EVENT

The description for Event ID ( 1 ) in Source ( NtApm ) cannot be found. The
local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message
DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use
the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for
details. The following information is part of the event: , 60.

Again - are you saying that your machine turns itself on from a powered
off condition, or is simply rebooting? In either event, it is
extraordinarily unlikely that it is related in any way to Windows XP
SP2.

What did you try? Have you unplugged your network cable overnight?
Have you unplugged your modem overnight? If you have both, and
unplugging them both keeps the machine from automatically turning on,
then plug them in one at a time for each of the next two nights to
determine if either one individually is the culprit.

NtApm relates to Advanced Power Management - are you sure your machine
is shutting down cleanly and completely? Do a google search on windows
xp apm or windows xp power management, and check out the following as
well

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307525/EN-US/

You may also want to verify that your motherboard BIOS is up to date.

If you would, please specifically answer questions and address the
suggestions raised in this post so that you may receive more accurate
and helpful assistance.

I rechecked and find that I do get a 7036 following a 6005 but these would
logically be normal events expected to follow a 6009.

I have a similar problem: I leave my computer on mostly all the time. About
every 2-3 hours I get an automatic restart power on. I haven't seen it happen
when I was at my desk. I checked the event log and I get recurring 6009
events [but not 7036]

I get the following Microsoft on line:

Explanation
The user restarted or shut down the computer by clicking Start or pressing
CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and then clicking Shut Down. The message displays the
Windows product information for the computer logging the message, including
the product name, version, build number, service pack number, and operating
system type.

This I did not do.. it was automatic. I have the My
Computer/Advanced/Startup and Recovery/ set to get a blue screen (i.e.,
Automatic Restart block unchecked)

It started doing this less than 2 weeks ago??????

Check you BIOS settings for anything dealing with Power and rebooting.
Also, check for rebooting from network.

What kind of network config do you have? DSL, Cable, Lan? Have you turned
off allowing people to remote connect in?

Thanks for reply New ' !!
I know how to check BIOS and I have Cable But don't know how to check for
remote connect in, or rebooting from network.? I haven't made any changes
that would relate to the problem.

Info:
I went back to check the event log as far back to the end and the 6009 has
been occurring for a month i.e. from the beginning of the log , and I really
didn't notice so I don't know how long before that it has been going on.?

Any other advice greatly appreciated..

You've probably got a "scheduled" power up time set in yout BIOS, ...go in
there and switch it off :)

Download SpeedFan 4.32 and use it to monitor the motherboard
based sensors. Many OEM PCs do not apply correct Thermal
paste to the CPU or the Passive heatsinks for the Northbridge &
Southbridge chips. The latest "Beta" version 4.33 now provides
the ability to monitor Video card thermals. ( Which are becoming
the warmest component in many PCs ).

I am wrestling with the same issue at the present time. I've tried
system restore, chkdsk /r, and various other things. I too have turned
off the automatic restart in system properties.

I would suspect a power supply problem or an over heating processor but
then again I don't get any indication that the computer did not shut
down any way except normally.
Considering your PC *starts* without your intervention, I doubt it's overheating problem. Unless you messed something up in BIOS, You might try putting your components in another case and see if it's happening again, maybe your power button is getting stuck somehow and this starts the computer.
