My PC Completely hangs up when I try to defrag it.

I've this problem and I can't find the cause.

When I try to defrag a partition the computer completely stops and I
can do nothing; I can't move the mouse, I can't open the task manager
Even the numloc can't be turned off. The only option that I have is the
Reset Button.

I've noticed also that this happens when I leave the computer Idle the
system loads two processes : defrag.exe & frgntfs.exe and the same
thing happens.

The problem is that this does'nt always happen it happens sometimes and
other times it don't.

I don't know what to do or where is the problem?????

Is it a hardware or a software problem???

Is it a hardware or a software problem???

It could go either way. To seperate the two, you first need to test
your hardware. (RAM and HDD in particular)

Get memtest86 from www.memtest.org

Get the drive diagnostics from the HDD manufacturor.

Open up the Computer, and examine the motherboard, do you see any
Bulging Capicitors?

For software causes, run an antivirus and spyware scan. Come to think
of it, it could BE an issue with the antivirus program. Try disabling
it and see if the defrag works then.

If all else fails. Keep in mind that Defragging isn't all that
critical.
