Defrag Won't Start

D

Dan M

before I get started I want to point out I don't know too much about
technical things such as files and such to get anything working.

Now for my problem.

I try to start Defrag, It opens up and everything, when I hit analyze or
Defrag, it comes up instantly with an error message saying: Disk Defragmenter
could not start.

that is all it says, and my computer is really hurting, and needs a defrag,
badly, since my virus scanner software went to trash as well.

Let's begin with the last, first... what does "went to trash as well"
mean??

My virus scanner was having problems with something. It's probably nothing of
importance.

So, it's not working as it should fully, but it's still working.

The primary problem is my Defrag and it's not wanting to start. ( My
computer got awfully slower and I usually defrag to fix this.)

You need to scan your system for malware - if possible.

Start with malwarebytes:

http://malwarebytes.org/

Then try a second: superantispyware:

This did not work, kept saying couldn't install the scanner.

And I have no idea what that would do anyways, since it will tell me if I
need a defrag and my Defrag not starting is the problem overall.

Malware scanned and taken out, still have problem.

There are other defrag options available.

First, try uninstalling and reinstalling your AV software to see if
you can fix that problem.

I downloaded and scanned with Malwarebytes.

Still has the problem.

For the last time... there are other defrag options available, if you
don't want to have to reinstall/recover your system.

Have you TRIED to uninstall then reinstall the malfunctioning
anti-virus program?

well, defrag depends
largely on the allowance
of virtual memory.

open the virtual memory
console and near the
lower part, there are
some stats and recommendations.

what are the stats?

see here for instructions:

---------------------

in addition, can you tell us
how much ram your system
has, how big is the hard disk
and how much of it is either
used or free.

Sorry to hear that.

Try the suggestions made by "Nate Grossman" is his post (i.e. reinstall
/ replace your anti-virus software).

Also, in the mean time, here is a link to the download page for Iobit
Smart Defrag, that's been installed on my system for about a year and
have used about 20 times quite effectively.

http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html

The problems you are having are probably the result of malware that has
now been removed from your system.

Sorry I could not be of more help.

You do not NEED a defragmentation program. In fact, if you have an NTFS file
system, defragging will make no noticeable (or even detectable) difference
in anything.

Further, it's obvious you're trying to fix the wrong problem. If the
defragger is but one of several things that will not run, the defragger
issue is but a symptom of a larger problem.

Forget about the defragger and concentrate on the bigger picture.

I apoligize if I annoyed you, I did not know nor udnerstand there were other
defragging systems out there.

i don't want to upset anyone here.

I plan to reinstall Norton, it's jsut a fact of available time to do so.

Again sorry if i annoyed anyone.

Thank you, that defag software is working.

I did not know they had several options to defrag, i thought it was a
computer-built in thing only.

D/l and try Defraggler ; if that doesn`t work , you`ve probably still
got malware .

Pure, unadulterated BULLSHIT.

If you configure it right, it will defrag your drive when the computer
is idle automatically so you're always running a unfragmented drive.
