When I've been shutting down my computer I've been getting a end program
message. Some times the computer will shut down after the message does it's
little scan thing with the bars you know. And other times I'll end program
will keep popping up and I've have to keep hitting okay , okay...... and I
think I had to shut it down manually before. I don't know what the deal is.
Is it a conflict between the many programs, which are listed below, I use on
my computers ? So my new computer has frozen up. I figure it has to be from
something I'VE done to the computers like one the programs I've added.

I''m a beginner user. My computer ,which is using currently xp home is the
basic dell dimension. 512 memory, dvd, all in one printer, the regular
monitor.Klispsch speakers.Ipod,itunes,Msn messenger.Mcafee secuirty,google
desktop, Olympus fe-100 and Olympus master software and windows media etc.
I''m getting some errors here and there and I''m here seeking answers to
problems my new computer is having. I think a lot of the problems are
software issues

What kind of anti-virus program came with your computer?
Most likely Norton or McAfee and sometimes they conflict with XP and cause
similar symptoms.
Once I uninstalled the one that came with mine and went to AVG everything is
well.

The machine was brand new 3 months ago. I read the windows xp for dummies and
it said windows xp comes with the firewall enabled and I'm confident it was
and still is enabled. I believe I have it set up for automatic updates. And I
havve renewed my McAfee subscription for the FULL package. McAfee scans for
viruses tues, thurs, and saturday or sunday. I think it's set up to update
automatically also.

Okay, I double clicked security center once I was in control panel. Once it
opened and under security essentials it read : Firewall On, Automatic Updates
On, Virus Protection On. My Windows firewall was ON (and allowing exceptions)
My McAfee firewall is on too. So I turned windows firewall off and closed
the security center and checked my McAfee firewall settings and they were set
to trusting, which I don't like, but when I opened back up security center it
read : Firewall On , even after I turned it off. However , When I clicked on
the FIREWALL in windows security center it DID read off. So , I'm guessing
the Windows Security Center tells you when ANY firewall is on.And it does say
WHY YOU SHOULD RUN ONLY ONE FIREWALL I wouldn't be surprised if the
simultaneously running firewalls are conflicting. But what I'm getting hung
up on is not using WINDOW'S firewall. Why shouldn't I ? Microsoft ,who are
huge in the computer world, put it there. What would work better ? We
wouldn't be communicating with out microsoft. Maybe I'll just turn off McAfee
firewall because Microsoft has got to be on top of this issue. What do you
think ? You never told me which computer you have , PA Bear.

Don't run two firewalls. You achieve no extra protection, you incur the
extra overhead of running two firewalls, and you run the risk (probably
small, but not zero) of conflicts between them.

See http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/firewall.mspx which
includes the following:

"Q. Should I use both the built-in firewall and a software firewall from a
different company on my Windows XP computer?

"A. No. Running multiple software firewalls is unnecessary for typical home
computers, home networking, and small-business networking scenarios. Using
two firewalls on the same connection could cause issues with connectivity to
the Internet or other unexpected behavior. One firewall, whether it is the
Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall or a different software firewall,
can provide substantial protection for your computer."

Also note that if you update your third-party firewall to a new version, the
update routine will probably turn it off first. If the Windows firewall
isn't running, you will temporarily be left with no running firewall, which
is very dangerous. So turn on the Windows firewall temporarily before doing
maintenance on your third-party firewall.

The Windows firewall monitors incoming traffic only. Almost any third-party
firewall will also monitor outbound traffic, stopping rogue programs trying
to call home, and is a better choice.
