My Network Places

I am running Windows XP Pro and have had a home network that uses various Lynksys devices to connect to a Lynksys BEFW11S4 v2. All of the computers (there are 6 in total) connect wirelessly but [this] one, which connects directly with an Ethernet cable and an HP printer which uses an HP JetDirect 170x to connect via an Ethernet cable as well.

Sometimes my BEFW11S4 shows up on "My Network Places" -- allowing me to just click on it if I want to access the web-based configuration screens -- and sometimes it doesn't. The HP printer works great but never shows up anywhere on the network but can be accessed via the control panel. I have no idea why. Do you? It seems to me that both should always show up.

I have a similar problem. Here's what I did to work around it.

Open My Network Places.

Click View Workgroup Computers

Right click the networked computer and create a shortcut on the desktop. If
you are on Computer 1 Right click Computer 2. If you are on Computer 2,
Right click Computer 1 etc.

Every shared folder will be accessible by using that new shortcut even if
they don't show up in My Network Places. I don't understand why, and I
finally gave up after spending a couple of hours trying to figure it out.

Thanks for the response Joe. In my case the two devices that don't [always]
show up aren't computers -- which is what I think you're addressing. One is
my WAP/Ethernet Switch/Router (Linksys) and the other is a network-attached
HP Officejet printer.

I understand, but if you create shortcuts for each computer, those devices
will be present when you click those shortcuts.

I created a Folder on my Desktop called My Network Places. I placed the
computer shortcuts as previously described in my other post, in that folder.

I then used TweakUI for XP to remove the "regular" My Network Places icon
from the Desktop. Then I changed the icon of the My Network Places folder
to the same one as the My Network Places icon/shortcut that I removed from
the Desktop using TweakUI.

Here's a composite screen shot of what I did:

XP TweakUI can be downloaded here:
