When you say you "formatted", you mean you erased CD-RW disk?
If so, this has no effect on your actual DVD rewriter.
You state it plays DVD's? It is software that actually plays the DVD movie.
Example, I use PowerDVD software to play DVD movies.
The software you use to view DVD movies is not same as to access data
or play CD audio.
You may have changed file associations?
Post more details of your problem.
Meanwhile try this:
Place a data or audio CD in drive.
Place cursor on "My Computer" and double-click
A windows opens detailing your configuration.
Locate the drive in which you placed the CD
Place cursor on it and RIGHT click,
In menu that appears, select "Open"
If a window opens detailing the CD's contents
then NO prob with drive, it is a software issue.

What brand of DVD/CD combo burner drive do you have and what software are you
using to burn with?

I have a TDK DVD/CD combo burner drive and I use the Roxio software that
came with it. Did you install the burner software? Is something that just
happened. Where you able to burn DVDs before?

You don't "format" a dvd writer. You format the disk that it contains.

This sounds like a hardware issue -- it is broken and needs to be replaced.

Bad advice from Jim,
It plays DVD movies, it is NOT broken
It is most likely a software issue!
Original poster please supply more details.

DVD's and CD's require light wavelengths and so use seperate lasers, IF
the CD laser died, this is what would happen.
