my defragmenter is broken

M

Madx

Analyze says I should defrag so I do and it gets to 13% compacting and then
says defrag complete. I check analyze and it still says i should defrag.
I've done this numerous times with no better results.

How can i fix disk defragmenter?

TIA

What percent free space do you have on your hard drive?

Is your hard disk formatted as FAT32 or NTFS. Select Start, Control
Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management to
find out.

If NTFS select, Start, Run, type "cmd" without quotes and hit Enter,
type "Chkdsk /f /r" without quotes and hit Enter. Answer Y to the
question which appears and exit.. You must restart the system before the
disk scan begins.

I have run scan disk on restart already. It's disk defragmenter that
doesn't work. See first post.

Scandisk is a utility for checking drives formatted as FAT32 and was
provided by Microsoft for use with Windows 98 / Windows ME. It is not
provided for use with Windows XP. I am well aware that it's Disk
Defragmenter that doesn't work properly. One reason it sometimes doesn't
work properly is that there can be problems with the disk. Running
chkdsk will reveal whether there are problems.

Another problem could be that Disk Defragmenter is being interupted. You
might try running Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode.

Try using msconfig. Delete all items in startup. Reboot and run defrag. This
will have the effect of not loading any program which can interrupt defrag.
While defrag is running or before starting you may want to use task manager
to see what may be happening.

Not good advice. Rather like chopping off your hand to remove a splinter
in your finger.

This is a diagnostic technique. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it.
Would you care to post your concerns?

G

Gerry

Hardly diagnostic when you say "Delete all items in startup." Far
simpler to run Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode to achieve the same
objective and not be so destructive. In any event there are far better
ways to disable items in Start if you need to.

Good grief how is it in any way destructive by simply blocking the loading
of programs? Your diagnostic procedures obviously vary from mine but to say
mine are destructive leaves me with the impression you don't know much about
XP.

G

Gerry

I know sufficient to know you Disable and not DELETE if you are using
msconfig as a diagnostic tool!

Your right of course it's not called scan disk but error checking which is
what I had done.

I tried safe mode and ran analyze said i should defrag so I did but the
results were the same. Defrag complete but analyze still says i should
defrag. Here is the report.

I agree with Bob that your Report does not indicate any real problems.

You may be able to get the pagefile more contiguous i.e. reduce the
number of fragments.

Set the pagefile to Zero and restart the computer. Select Start, All
Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System
Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore point? Run Disk
Defragmenter and then set the pagefile to a minimum and a maximum of 1.5
gb and restart the computer. If it works the result will be a nice green
single unmovable contiguous block in the middle of the drive.

You can check the result by then do another Analyse with Disk
Defragmenter and comparing the result with this:
Pagefile fragmentation
Pagefile size = 1.50 GB
Total fragments = 52

I set the pagefile to 0 and cleaned up restore, restarted, ran defrag same
results only got to 13% compacting and then got the complete message. Also
I do not see any green block on the color graph?

Here is the new report. Is there anything else I can try? Thank you

You have not completed what I suggessted.

Run Disk Defragmenter and then set the pagefile to a minimum and a
maximum of 1.5 gb and restart the computer. If it works the result will
be a nice green single unmovable contiguous block in the middle of the
drive.

It is the pagefile that comprises the green block. No pagefile = no
green block
