My Computer Folder Duplication Issue

B

Bill Helbron

Last year when I purchased my new Pentium 4, 3.4GHz computer, the technician set
up my system for Windows XP from my old Windows 98. I'm not sure if XP creates
certain specific folders or whether the tech did since he transferred all of my
old files onto the new drive. The tech may have thought that my computer may be
used by several people.

What I have now is somewhat confusing. Now, in the C:\ drive, I have a folder
called C:\My Documents, a folder called C:\Documents and Settings\Bill/My
Documents, and still another folder called C:\Bill's Documents The latter folder
appears to be a duplicate of the files in C:\Documents and Settings\Bill\My
Documents.

My question is: if I try to reorganize the C:\ drive to avoid this duplication
and "simplify" the location of my files, will this "screw up" any XP set-up
protocols? I'd really like to have all of my "primary" folders under the C:\
drive. Suggestions, please!

Bill, it sounds like the technician did an upgrade on your system,
Doing this, the former 98 programs were copied over with XP.
Then he re-copied all the files again,
So you can delete all the duplicates, sending them to the recycle bin.
You can always go to the recycle bin and have them replaced if you run into
problems.

Hi Squire,

Thanks for your reply and suggestions! I managed to accomplish most of it but in
the C:\Documents and Settings\Bill, it tells me that this file and the
C:\Documents and Settings\Bill\My Documents files are system folders and cannot
be renamed or deleted. Everything else has been successfully repositioned! No
big deal, but those folders are now empty and are of no value!

Hi, Bill

You can try booting into safe mode, by repeatedly tapping the F8 key as soon
as you see anything on the screen.
Then using the up arrow to Safe mode, and hitting Enter.
This bypasses Windows startup files, and you can delete the first -
C:\Documents and Settings\Bill,
The second C:\Documents and settings\Bill\My Documents is one you want to
keep.

You say there are 2 files that say system that have nothng in the but won't
delete.
There is a free program GiPo@moveonboot that will remove these programs
after the next boot. Try it. It has worked great for me.
