Music problems after XP and iPOD installation

Hi - I recently upgraded my ThinkPad T22 from 98SE to XP,
mainly to be able to install the iPOD. While the device
works properly, the sound of the PC never recovered from
the experience. After a few minutes of playing (either on
Media Player 9 or on Musicmatch Jukebox - the iPOD music
software) the sound gets metallic, then slow, then
terrible.

Any ideas? Thanks.
