Multiple Versions of Messenger running concurrently

L

Leon Vandenberg

Hello

I have tried to upgrade Messenger consistently from when
XP 1st shipped

Now I find two versions running in my System Tray

ver 4.7 and ver 5.0

I tried to use control panel to remove all copies and re-
install... this did not work

any ideas?

Thanks

Greetings Leon,

MSN Messenger 5 does not replace Windows Messenger 4.7 (they are separate, different
products). You can remove Windows Messenger 4.7, but if you do, you will be preventing
Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize
Messenger from working (or loading without problems). You can just disable Windows Messenger
4.7, by opening it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this program
when Windows starts'. This won't stop it from being loaded by some other application though.
As well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs,
Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the components list
and click Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed Windows XP Service Pack
1 -- if you haven't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't remove Windows
Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way, and allow MSN Messenger 5 to work
properly.

Messenger.

dan

i've got the same problem with version 6 which i've just
downloaded today.

version 4.7 is still present dispite already trying these
actions and is still signing in automatically without me
knowing when i go on line.

the tickbox to tell it not to launch automatically has
now disappeared.

msn mention removing the passport acount in the user
accounts advanced settings, but i don't have an advanced
tab as it describes.

will an uninstall app let me remove it completely or is
there something simpler that i've missed??

Hi Dan,

As a quick fix for this, start MSConfig (click Start, then Run, enter "msconfig" and click
OK), then click the Startup tab, uncheck the 'msmsgs' entry and click OK.

As well, do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging
scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this
behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the
System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options,
then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
