Multiple service startup problems

J

Jo

For some reason I'm getting a lot of error messages in the event log
about services that won't start. Here are a few of them:

The Parallel port driver service failed to start due to the following
error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or
because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
FltMgr

The SSDP Discovery Service service depends on the following
nonexistent service: HTTP

The DCOM Server Process Launcher service hung on starting.

I don't know why it wants to install a parallel port driver, since
I don't have a parallel port.
I've been having these problems ever since I tried to do a
reinstall after installing SP2. I don't have a restore point to go
back to, so I can only just reinstall from the CD. I suspect that some
of these services are only pertinent to SP2. As of now I have
WinXPHESP1.
I'm told that the SSDP service needs the HTTP service, but how do
you install a service?

How did you do the reinstall - was it a clean install? Here are
instructions for how to do a clean install:

It was a repair install. I know how to do a clean install, but I've
got a lot to lose in doing it (all of which is time).

Jo,

Did you ever find a resolution to those errors? I also did a repai
install of windows which removed SP2 and I have those errors to
(except the parallel port one). I was told to disable UPnP. I haven'
because I'm afraid it might affect my dsl modem connection.

Did you have a problem with Windows Updates? Mine doesn't recogniz
the updates I need.

Sincerely, Libra

I don't have anything to suggest on your issue other than I don't think
disabling UPnP will affect your DSL modem connection. Besides it's no
big deal to try. Just disable it in services and see what happens. If
the modem connection is affected, which it shouldn't be, then just
re-enable it.

Thank you Rick. The last time I disabled two services (Remote Desktop
and TCP/IP NetBios Helper (this one I disabled and then realized it wa
still running , so I clicked on "stop".) Everything seemed fine, bu
trying to get to an ISP everything froze and when I used the towe
button and turned the pc back on, Windows wouldn't start - got file i
missing or corrupt - C\Windows\System32\config. The tech had me do
repair install of Windows which left some remnants of SP2 on th
computer. I was told this was an SP2 problem and not a result of m
disabling those two services, but it's left me apprehensive r
disabling services.

It is surprising that disabling two services caused that much trouble.
Usually if something won't run when a service is disabled, turning it
back on fixes it fine. Since it didn't in your case it suggests a
bigger problem. I disable / enable services regularly and can tell you
it's not normally nor has it ever been a problem on my system.

Greetings

I too did a "Repair" reinstall of SP1 after some issues with SP2, and have
the same error "The DCOM Server Process Launcher service hung on starting."
It takes about 5 minutes for my PC to get to the GUI after I log on; has
anyone else seen a resolutiob to this issue?
