Uhm..
I thought I understood - then I did not.

You have a Windows XP Computer.
You have two monitors.

If you are trying to connect the two monitors to one machine - first thing
to verify is that you have a dual-monitor capable setup. You would need two
video cards or a video card with dual outputs and in either case - the
card(s) must be capable of a dual monitor configuration.

After confirming that - you would hook both monitors to said computer. Your
primary monitor likely has a picture - your secondary may not at this point.
You would then open the Display Properties for Windows XP and enable the
second monitor and extend your desktop onto it.

Windows XP is an Operating System - software - it does not have any
hardware. You computer (PC) has the video card(s) in it and Windows XP has
device drivers that allow it to utilize the hardware in the PC.

You could download/install this software:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

And allow it to run on your system.

Then - copy just the section labeled "Display" and post it back here.

Jeff, a single computer can use two monitors with the proper hardware and
drivers. I currently use two monitors connected to a dual head ATI card.
Another way to do this is to use 2 compatible display cards in the same
computer.

It sounds like you are trying to get two pcs hooked up together through the
monitors. There are ways to "connect" two systems but what is the right way
to do that depends on what it is that you're trying to accomplish.

In general, some examples of what can be done: KVM switches can allow a
single keyboard, mouse and monitor (or multiple monitors) to be used to
control multiple machines. Or something like MaxiVista
(http://www.maxivista.com) can be used to make a second PC stand in as an
extra monitor for a primary system.

But if all you're trying to do is to network two systems together, you're
going about it the wrong way. More info about your goals and you'll get
good suggestions from this group. Lots of sharp hardware folks post here (I
learn a lot from them anyhow).

Hi again, Jeff.
To extend the desktop to the second monitor, use
Display Options> Settings. Click on the second monitor so that it's
highlighted. Then check the box to "extend my Windows desktop onto this
monitor." Also, you can move the monitors on this Settings screen around.
For example you can place them side by side as monitor1 and monitor2 or the
other way around. Or put one on top of the other. The placement should
duplicate how you actually have them positioned.

I have mine setup with the primary on the left and secondary to the right.
With "extend desktop" enabled, I can drag from left to right to get windows
onto the second monitor. The windows cannot be maximized when you drag
them. Once on the second monitor, then maximize if that's what you prefer.

There is a site that I like for multiple monitor information:
www.realtimesoft.com
They sell a product called "UltraMon" that enhances multiple monitor
setups. It's a very nifty product but I don't use it simply because I don't
use all the extra options the program offers. Anyhow, the site is also
excellent for good general information about hardware combos, advice on
setup and usage, a database of working hardware combinations, etc. They
have active user forums as well.

Sharon: Jeff has the same need I have; not to expand his desktop onto one or
more additional monitors, but to duplicate it on separate, remote monitor.

I've tried every combination of settings on display, but I don't think the
remedy is there. Do you have one?

I am using Dualview successfully with a laptop, docking station and 2
external monitors, ie, when the laptop is in the docking station, I am not
using the laptop's screen, but 2 external monitors using Dualview.

Normally, when I undock the computer and reboot the computer, the windows
(when I reopen them) appear fine on the laptop's monitor. However, in some
cases, where the window had last been on external monitor 2, the window opens
"off screen". In other words, it is open, but is trying to reside in a space
to the right of the laptop monitor, ie, on external monitor 2, which is no
longer there.

I cannot retrieve these errant windows. Even using tools like Alt-Tab don't
bring them back to the one and only one active monitor.

How can I hook into these out of this world windows and drag them back to
the only active monitor?

Any tips will be appreciated. Thanks.
