MSXML3.DLL fails to register

April

Recently I purchased Office 2003, and have been unable to install it from
the CD. It keeps generating an error message after you input the product ID
key and click NEXT. The error message is totally worthless (as are much of
Microsoft's error messages)...something about the source being corrupt.
There is nothing corrupt with the CD, since I can take to a host of other
PCs, and the installation will proceed just fine.

In doing some investigation, there seems to be a connection with the
msxml3.dll in respect to the installation wizard/routine that MS uses.
However, there appears to be something wrong with this PC's attempt to
load/run the msxml3.dll

When I attempt to manually register it via a DOS window, ala...
c:>regsvr32 msxml3.dll ...I always get the error " DllRegisterServer
in mxsml3.dll failed. Return code was: 0x80070005 "

If it means anything, the version 4 of this works fine. regsvr32 msxml4.dll
works fine.

I also should point out that I have reinstalled Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
twice now in the past week, and the subsequent Update Rollup for SP4.

The only other problem I am having (which might be related) is that my
Windows Automatic Update service is not working perfectly. I will be
notified of new updates, and they will download fine. But when you attempt
to install the updates, they always fail. It's as if something prevents MS
applications from installing.

Can anyone shed clues on why registering msxml3.dll fails?

And no, there are no software firewalls in place, and the PC has no viruses
or spyware or trojans.

"Installation source has been corrupted" error message when you install

John,

Thanks, but I've been there, done that....over a week ago. We know how to
google error messages, and look for MS KB articles...so what you suggested
has been tried repeatedly. It unfortunately solves nothing. First, the URL
the KB points to no longer contains the service pack 4 for MSXML 3.
Searching MSDN, however, uncovers SP 5, since SP 4 has been put out to
pasture. Downloading the msxml3 sp 5 .MSI file and attempting to install
the SP 5 generates the following warning:

"Your system has newer vesrion of MSXML3 SP5 than the version you are
attempting to install. Setup will quit." ...Again, another useless message
from Microsoft. How can I have a newer version of MSXML than even the
latest service pack offers?

So once more, I hit a brick wall, stuck.

Try posting to an Office newsgroup. And tell them what you already
tried so that they don't waste their time suggesting already tried
solutions.

Strange...I'm having a problem very similar to April's.
I am running Windows 2000 Pro SP4 on my home/personal computer; recently I
had a "crash", and had to use my ERD. Ever since, I keep finding things that
are totally out of sync (this is probably because when I updated all the apps
on the pc, I didn't recreate the ERD...I've learned THAT lesson!). Anyway,
so I had to reinstall IE6, and the service packs, etc. I've managed to get
almost everything working again - EXCEPT Microsoft Updater. If I try to
access the site manually, it says:
***
"Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or
installed on your computer. To continue:
1. Register or reinstall the files for me now
2.Top of Form 1
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem"
***
I reinstalled and registered about a million times, to no avail. So I
checked out their other suggestions. I cannot register the msxml3.dll either.
NOR can I register the wuaueng1.dll. All other files registered fine.
None of the other solutions worked either. I must be missing SOMETHING - but
I'm stumped.
Auto Update (as in April's case) WILL notify me of updates and download
them, but it will not install them; every one fails. And I get the
"0x80070005" message as well, but I AM an admin.
I sure hope someone has an answer....I've been at this for 48 hours, and
feel completely vulnerable since I know I don't have most critical updates!
