msvcrt.dll causing problems with Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional

System is win XP SP2, fully updated. Have Adobe Acrobat Professional 6.0
installed, fully updated to version 6.0.4. Up until now, Acrobat has been on
automatic update & has had no problems.

The other day, Acrobat would not open - got the error " this program must be
shut down sorry for the inconvenience". Could not even open the program to
test anything.

I tried detect & repair on each of the updates & original & then uninstalled
each of the updates (except for one which could not be uninstalled) - so
basically stripped it back almost to original version, then reinstalled the
updates. (Though this was done by manual download from the website).

The reason for this was that after stripping the updates back, I got the
program to open and work except could not use the update function on the help
menu. (This caused it to crash again).

I suspect that the reason the program failed to open at all in the first
place was that it was trying to do a scheduled update, as the program crashes
still whenever an update is attempted.

The cause given for this crash is given as msvcrt.dll being an invalid
module - goes on to give the fatal exception string, etc.

Now I expect that this has been caused by some new version of msvcrt.dll
being installed by some other update or program which is incompatible with
Adobe.

I found an article on Microsoft about this & it said it can be caused by
Microsoft Visual C++ Run library.

I seem to be in the category described as not having the program (Visual
c++) installed on my computer, though I do see a folder with some reference
to it in amongst all the default Windows stuff - but I don't think the whole
program is installed and I don't (intentionally) use the program.

The article then goes on to say that a set of new dll libraries supplied at
another link need to be downloaded to overcome this problem. However when
this is followed up, the download file is applicable to Win 98 - no mention
of XP.

I'd like a Microsoft MVP to comment on this & suggest what else I can do.

I did try replacing the msvcrt.dll file in C:Windows\system32 with a
previous version but of course I didn't even know if this was the correct
version, and I had all sorts of trouble trying to change (rename) the file as
any attempt to overwrite or delete it results in another copy being
replicated (presumably from dllcache).

I eventually managed to get a different version in there, but it made no
difference (though I didn't restart the computer - perhaps I needed to do
that? Or to register the file?)

Then I had a devil of a time putting things back as they were - eventually
succeeding in safe mode.

I now have the msvcrt.dll file as it was at the beginning of the trouble.

I have in the meantime set adobe acrobat to update manually as I am afraid
at the next scheduled auto-update the program will freeze again since this is
what happens when I try to update from the program (rather than downloading &
installing from the website).

Any guidance etc most appreciated.

Hi
I ahd a very similar sounding error with IE on my bosses computer. Using a
program called BHODaemon I found it had some spyware on it. Maybe....?

Have you asked Adobe tech support?

I've had a look over the Adobe site, including forums and it seems I'm not
the only one. I haven't contacted Adobe directly - prevous experience with
help desks is that I end up knowing more about the problem than the person on
the other end (who usually has a manual of prepared responses). I think this
is a sticky one because it's a conflict between Adobe and Windows (my
assumption) which requires one or the other or both to come up with a fix.
Had this problem before with a HP and Windows conflict but Microsoft brought
out the patch to fix it. Just posing this so that the problem is publicised
and in case anyone has come up with a workaround. I might be wrong with all
my thinking but I've seen other posts in various forums with people having
the same or very similar problem.

I found thousands of tmp files in the Adobe Acrobat folder. I deleted these
and since then the update works! Fingers crossed that has solved it.
