mspaint that can save as jpg & gif files

C

ComeMon!

Hi,

I found my windows 98, ME & 2000 installation came with mspaint.exe
which could only save file as .bmp or .dib. But I knew the XP version
of mspaint could save image file as .jpg & .gif. Is there any mspaint
that can run under windows 98, ME & 2000 which can save image files as
..jpg & .gif ? Because I don't have XP on hands.

Yes, MSPaint sure can save as jpeg and gif under Win 98. But I think you
need the proper converters. They come with MS Office. I am not sure if you
can get them elsewhere. Someone else may know.

Good luck.

Not sure about mspaint.exe, but this is a free program
that can convert any picture format, .jpg, .gif, to
another format such as .bmp and vice-versa. Check it out
here:

Hope this helps.

As Anthony said, you must need the proper converters. I am on Win2000Pro, and without actually aiming to accomplish this particular feat, somehow my MSPaint can save as .jpg, .gif, etc. I do have Office2000 installed, so maybe that's what made the difference.

lets verify WHAT office versions we are talking about...Office 97 does not supply those filters...and seeing how that version is
most likely the one that is installed on older oS's i would say, most people will not have those save options.....I will check my
install CD of office 97 and see if they were left off on the last install.

Yes absolutely!
...and you do not need any Office software installed to do so, and instead
you could just make a few simple adjustments.

Irfanview is a spectacular program and a great replacement for paint as an
image viewer.

But I think MSPaint is the most underrated Win program. It is perfect for
doing things like stitching together jpegs and other images, including scans
and faxes. As a journalist, I use it all the time to makes repairs in
scanned stories. You can easily repair even part of a single character.
Missing part of the letter "a", for example? Just copy it from elsewhere in
the document and replace. For such purposes, I like using it better than
more sophisticated imagine software, such as Photo Shop or the Gimp or Adobe
Photodeluxe. It is very simple. It also is great to use in conjunction with
PrintScreen to move things between applications and tweak them along the
way.

Let us not forget the (superior to MSPaint) program called QV. QuickView
may as well have been titled QuickPaint, for it is a GREAT replacement for
MSPaint and works in all Win9x environments to support .JPG

Perhaps you should take the time to sit back, relax and read all about Quick
View again. Pay particular attention to anything that relates to editing.

OK ... sat back, relaxed, and read everything available about my copy
of QuickView (QV). Just what was it you couldn't comprehend? Here I
sit (still) while drawing horns and boobs on sample .JPG pictures. Was
MSPaint supposed to do more? You need to elaborate somewhat more.

No you seem to have caught it now. Quick View is incapable of any direct
editing. It passes editing responsibility off to the appropriate program. In
your case that program was MSPaint which will have the same limitations as it
would had you opened it directly in MSPaint. If the proper filters are not
installed on the system then it doesn't matter how you open the graphic, you
still will be limited to the formats normally available on your system. QV has
nothing to do with that.

It's brilliant for this alone:

1) Press PrintScreen (or Alt+PrintScreen)
2) Run Paint
3) Edit menu, Paste

I have Office 97 installed and my version of paint can save to .jpg just
fine using the pull down menu.
