images saved as BMP ion outlook

I have used Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 but for some reason can never save
an image as a GIF or JPG! Even when the image is delivered to my email in
that format (I can tell because the GIF is moving) When I try to save it as
a GIF it will not. It only offers me the BMP extgension.
I can never get Microsoft to respong to this query!

does anyone have a suggestion to try or maybe some sort of work around?

I have the same issue when the file is embedded. The attached JPG files are
fine.
