No, you're not the only one.
Yesterday I installed MSN 6.1 as I wanted to use my webcam and microphone to
do a video conference with one of my contacts.
I haven't had any success in establishing a video/sound connection.
MSN 6.1 seems to be very unstable.
MSN keeps logging on and off.
Sometimes I get a message saying that I am behind a firewall.
Even when I just chatted MSN lost connection several times.
I also have the feeling that MSN 6.1 sometimes is interfering with my NIC
(Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection).
When MSN was running I lost LAN connection several times for just a second
or two.

Yes, I'm behind a personal firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro) and I have granted
access to MSN.
The PC is hooked to my LAN using an Edimax BR-6004Plus broadband router.
The Edimax router has build in NAT.

Anyone any suggestions of what might be wrong or how to get MSN running with
audio/video?

Thanks in advance.

I too have had nothing but frustrations getting audio and video
working. Generally, IM works consistantly fine. I can usually send
video OK, but getting audio to work is worse than a crap shoot. ONE
time I was able to get both working and thought I had solved it. That
was the LAST time. Now I can't get audio of any kind.

I too work behind both a Lynksys router and ZoneAlarm, but when I
removed everything including Norton antivirus, it made no difference.
I have read MANY posts of Jonathan Kay's and he has suggested some
interesting Windows setting, but so far none of them have helped me. I
have read all the help files available, but none address this problem.

One thing you need to try for sure is to open up the ports on your
router. On mine, I can set what they call the DMZ zone wide open. This
effectively stops the address translations. Gamers use this all the
time. I definitely HAVE to turn ZoneAlarm OFF. But then, it didn't
help me either, so I think the program is flawed.

Has anyone tried successfuly the "Windows Messenger" that comes with
Win XP? I don't like the video controls nearly as well though.

Windows Messenger, 5.0 in my case, works for me with my brother in England
on MSN Messenger 6.1. We tried the mixed connection by accident, and it
worked fine.
With both of us on MSN Mess 6.1, he can see and hear me, but I can only see
him, no audio. We are both on XP. He is dialup with Norton Firewall, and I
am cable with Linksys router and Zone Alarm.
We have tried all the posted remedies without success. Under the old Win
Messenger & Net Meeting we had no trouble.
Hopefully someday we will see corrections to the mess!

Try setting ZoneAlarm to Medium.

Thanks, but it always has been while trying to connect. Even turning ZA off
has no effect.

Windows Messenger, 4.7 in my case, worked for me with my friend on MS
Messenger 4.7.
Alternatively MSN Messenger, 6.1 in my case, worked for me with m
friend on Windows 4.7 only when I disable zonealarm pro although al
rights have been enabled. At his place he runs zonealarm with n
problem. We tried this mixed connection and it worked fine.
When I shutdown zonealarm while attempting to set up a audi
conversation with no succes finally, I tested to close and startu
MSN6.1 while keeping zonealarm down and the audio connection worke
then. So when zonealarm is running, it looks like something keep
hanging to avoid making a audio connection.
By the way, the virus scanner is alive during all this.

With my sister in law both of us on MSN Mess 6.1, she could hear m
when I was on 4.7.
Now on 6.1 she cannot hear me anymore, but I can see her, but no audio
We are both on XP with Zone Alarm which we of course disabled t
investigate if this worked (no).

I used the UNPN settings on my router, latest firmware with n
differences

I have a router aswell, and to be able to get the messenger to work,
had to configure the buildin firewall.

Im sure all of the above problems are related to that, because i hav
no problem in establishing voice conversations. However, for som
reason, the audio indicator is telling me that i am sending stuff, bu
the other user doesn't seem to receive it. He/She told me that he/sh
hears some noise or rumbled sounds. If i stop the audio conversion an
reinvite, we'll have a connection again, and he/she can hear me.

To do this, i had to set my computer to be a server on a specific port
I believe it was 1720, both TCP and UDP.

However this isn't the only thing that is required. For a full list o
ports, do a search for netmeeting problems. Why? because MSN Messenge
is using the same engine as netmeeting.

I hope this helps some of you

Try setting ZoneAlarm's Internet Zone Security (not onlt the Trusted
Zone) to 'Medium'.
