the only time i am aware that i am signed in is if i have
new mail or somebody sends me an instant message.there are
no icons on taskbar to alert me.
i am running windows messenger 4.6

Greetings Craig,

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause Windows
Messenger to automatically start and not be able to be closed. To stop it, open Norton
Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by
the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then
uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

I had the same problem after installing MSN Messenger,
Windows Messenger was installed during initial
installation of Windows XP with SP1. To resolve bit the
builit and uninstalled Window messenger via add/remove
Windows components in preference for MSN messenger.
Problem fixed however I not aware of impact on anyother
window componts. Still system has been running smothly
for two and a half months now. Further, I have Nortons
2003 with MSN Messenger checked.

Disabling MSN Messenger in Norton 2003 - won't that make it so that files
rec'd via Msgr are not checked for viruses? that seems rather dangerous to
me. Is there no other way around this?

TIA
