How to Disable MSN Messenger auto sign-in

Larry

Hi,
**I want to manually sign-in to MSN Messenger (not auto)
I have read many messages here and tried solutions I've
found but, my MSN Messenger persists in signing me in on-
line when I start MSN9 no matter what I do.
I had disabled Windows Messenger long time ago, so I
checked and it still does not start with Windows (requires
me to sign-in which, of course, I do not do)
I have unchecked "Automatically run Messenger...." and
also "Allow Auto sign-in" boxes at
MSN Messenger>Tools>Options>General
I have Norton 2002 not 2003 so I don't have that feature
I have ZoneAlarm and have "allowed" MSN Messenger (yes,
the newly installed v6.1) all access
Still, when I restart MSN9 I then see that MSN Messenger
is already started and I am on-line. Then I start
receiving messages unless I have everyone "blocked" and I
would prefer to do some business before I reply to any
instant messages (usually the reason anyone wants to sign-
in manually?).
What can I do additionally to disable auto sign-in of MSN
Messenger? Seems like I've tried everything.
My OS is XP Home
IE6
MSN9 (as mentioned)
MSN Messenger 6.1
Thanks for any help,
Larry

Hi Jonathan,
Well, I'm surprised at that.
One more reason I am slightly disallusioned with MSN9. I
am considering going back to MSN8.5.
I certainly trust your answers Jonathan but I might call
the MSN support and ask them also.
Just a thought though...if this is the case I wonder why
they would put in the option to "Automatically run
Messenger when I log on to Windows" plus the "Allow
automatic sign-in when connected to the Internet" (check
or uncheck)at Tools>Options>General>Sign-in? Seems as
though they are giving the user the option to auto start
or manually start MSN Messenger?
I'm going to research more. If I discover anything new
I'll post back.
Thanks Jonathan,
Larry

Greetings Larry,

Unfortunately there isn't anything you can do here if
you're using MSN9 -- MSN Messenger

for the time being why not jsut set your status as "appear offline" as soon as i signs in. That way no noe will bother you...

Yep, you're right. But, that's the reason for my post.
When I set it to "appear offline" it then shows me
as "online" when I restart Windows. I want it to stay in
the "offline" mode until I change it back manually but it
changes automatically upon restart without my doing
anything. Then I start receiving IM's. I use the comp for
business also and would prefer to do IM's later.
Ok, I see your point more clearly. I could "quickly" go
to Messenger and change the status but, even in those few
seconds contacts see me as online (right at Windows
startup).
Anyway, no biggee...I can live with it.
Thanks for your reply
