msiexec.exe crashing

I have not installed a program in my computer for around a month, yesterday
when i try to install photoshop msiexec.exe crashed with the normal crash
message.

what is interesting is that it is happening to all programs that needs
msiexec.exe to install and uninstall. i cannot even uninstall some programs
because msiexec.exe is crashing.

i even try commands like msiexec /unregister in run command and it would
crash.
the msiexec.exe file itself seems fine, if i double click on it it gives me
a box with a list of commad lines for it.

the file size is 78,848 bytes, the version is 3.1.4000.1823.

i even reinstall windows installer but to no effect.

I am trying to ascertain the exact version of Windows XP and there is
more than one version of Windows XP Professional. Please answer the
question. How is it described on the face of the CD?

I'm having the same problem but just with photoshop. I recently formatted and
installed XP 2002 SP2. All my programs installed except for photoshop CS3
which crashes half way through the install with MSIEXEC.EXE being the
culprit. I consequently installed CS2 and that went fine. Its completely
frustrating because the program installed fine on my previous windows as well
as 2 other PC's in my home.
