Attn Ms Susan,

As per your advice I have downloaded Program: Lock Folder
Author: Topdownloads Network (Leo van Opstal)
W: LFW
Ware: (Freeware) LFW (v 5.0)
http://www.realclicks.com/LockFolder/LockFolder.exe
1355 KB

and installed it in my computer.

But whenever I try to Lock a particular Folder by right clicking and then by
clicking Lock folder what I am getting is a new window opening and asking me
to choose the program you want to use to open this file dialog.

Kindly help me and please let me know how do I proceed and lock folders
using this application.

Regards.

I couldn't download the program because www.realclicks.com is in all my Host
file versions.
I bypassed my hostfile and downloaded lockfolder but trying to install it my
firewall rings and blocked the installation.
Reason : lockfolder is or contains SPR/Hcktool.Gendel.A.

One alarm is enough for me and I don't install this program.

I couldn't help you to solve your problem.
I'm almost sure that this alarm is a false positive, but I don't risk it.

sorry, I made an error

Thanks Willy,

Generally I have found that when Ms Susan Bugher recommends any program, it
is clean.

That's why I tried this one.

Anyway I did install the program but it simply refuses to lock folder.

I know something in my comp is obstructing it but I done know how to resolve
it.

Regards.

Anyway I did install the program but it simply refuses to lock folder.

I haven't tried this one myself. Did some checking to make sure it was
the same download I have (from a while back) - it is. AVG says the file
is clean.

I found (finally) a better download link:

I'm guessing the difference in file size is just a site error. re using
the app. . .

The author has a new Liteware (very lite) product:

Program: Folder Access (was Lock Folder)
Company: Topdownloads Network
Author: (Leo van Opstal)
Ware: Liteware
http://www.lockfolder.net/

I found this info in the ACF archives:

<http://groups.google.com/group/alt....t.comp.freeware&rnum=3&hl=en#beb3e6e6258d9419>

<q>
Folder Access has a very easy to use interface and the security of your
data is always a mouse click away. Folder Access is integrated with
windows explorer context menu so all you have to do is right click a
folder and click on Lock Folder menu option or to unlock click on
UnlockFolder menu option.
</q>

AFAIK Lock Folder works the same way.

Second guessing that guess. I think the author is playing games. . .

I tried installing the app. After "installation" of "Lock Folder" all I
seem to have gotten is the opportunity to install another app. :(
"Installing topdownloads Folder Protect" - an offer I declined.
The author has a new Liteware (very lite) product:

Program: Folder Access (was Lock Folder)

http://www.lockfolder.net/

That site is now DEAD. . . the Wayback Machine has some pages:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.lockfolder.net/

This site probably has the latest info (it seems to be owned by the author):
http://www.topdownloads.net/software/view.php?id=11463

I think the *original* version of "Lock Folder" v 5.0 must be GONE. I
don't know what "Folder Protect" is (perhaps it's another name for
"Folder Access"). I couldn't find a description on the net. I dunno
exactly what's going on - but IMO it's nothing good. ISTM I should add a
"not recommended" tag on "lock Folder" and remove "Folder Access" from
the ACF pages. Any comments?

Thnaks Ms Bugher for latest update.

It seems there is no free good folder locker available right now.

If you come across one please let us know.

I have an archived copy of Lock Folder 5.0 should anyone want an upload to
abf or mail. It is ~ 1.3 mb.

Sounds like a plan to me as we need to be able to totally trust what acf
tells us.

Dud offered us a way to look at the program

Could you upload the program to alt.binaries.freeware?

p.s.,
It is Antivir who gives the trojan/virus warning.

I'm surprised, but my provider got all the parts ;-).
Your version is 1222 kB and Susan's link version is 1356 kB on this
computer.
Avira/Antivir also warned me for your version.
Trying to install the program IUS_X32.EX_ triggered the antivirus software
with the same trojan warning : SPR/Hcktool.Gendel.A

Time to search more serious.

http://pcpitstop.invisionzone.com/lofiversion/index.php/t56966.html

oops; not what I hoped.

From http://www.viruslist.com/en/viruses/encyclopedia?virusid=63636

Aliases
not-a-virus:Tool.Win32.Gendel.a (Kaspersky Lab) is also known as:
not-a-virus:RiskWare.Tool.Gendel (Kaspersky Lab),
Behavior not-a-virus:Tool

Nobody seems to know what Gendel.A does or doesn't.
It seems to be not a virus, but if it's a trojan or not, who knows?

Tested the uploaded abf version.
Because the program is an .exe program you have to install all the parts.
Bypassing the virusscanner ( like Braniac : children don't do this at home
:) ) makes it possible to install?? the program.
If I look in the \..\lockfolder there is no program, but only a \setup
directory.
Looking in this directory I see an uninst.exe and uninst.log AND a 52 kB
program named grendel32.ex_.
The main program is C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\FolderProtect.exe (2204 kB ).

Susan already mentioned that if you start the program from your desktop the
program seems to start the real install.
You get an install screen again. At this point I aborted the installation.

I hate this constructions.
Programs shouldn't be installed in the systems folder; what is the function
from grendel32.ex_ ??
Why isn't it already extracted to a real .exe program?
After uninstalling the program the \..\setup\grendel32.ex_ still remains on
the computer.
Very, very suspicious!!

My conclusion : get rid of it.
The software installation stinks and the author should first made a clean
installation program and not this trapped shit.
