MS Java Virtual Machine Removal

Kelly, it seems to be a big problem for people in this group to include the
original text that they are replying to. I wonder why it is such a problem?
In the general 98 newsgroup people usually do not seem to have this problem.

You mention Win98 and usually......That said, for this group, there are many
different newsreaders being used, I would suppose. Nevertheless, the
original post is needed.

For example, Intuit's Quickbooks Pro version 2002 simply stopped working until
I got rid of SUN and went back to MSJVM. So much for the platform
independence of SUN 's Java. It's not that I prefer either of the two, it's
just that I have to keep
some old Win98 computer and old programs working. So...

Kirk, that is a good reason why so many more users will have to dual-boot
with 98SE and XP. You have to have two lines of code:

9x based on MS-DOS

and

NT (New Technology) based on a Command.Com prompt with a false (emulated
version of MS-DOS)

According to Chris Quirke (MVP), Microsoft has not developed a maintainence
operating system that would be the underlying core for XP. Gary S. Terhune
(MVP) also tells us that NT (XP, 2000, NT4) are all based on the emulated
version of MS-DOS and Microsoft has saved money, time and effort by going the
quick and easy way. I hope IBM will come back into the business and give
Microsoft a run for their money. Anyone besides me remember the failed OS/2
by IBM and IBM DOS. Now, a national security issue has arisen because IBM
wants to sell their software side to a Chinese company. I think it is bad
enough that the majority of the products, Americans must buy are Chinese made
and it is taking American jobs. There is also the border crises with Mexico
and the Mexican government apparently has released a booklet about how to
cross into the United States illegally. Mexico should fix their own corrupt
government, imo. Anyway, back on topic and I sincerely hope that there are
many comments on this post. Finally, I also sincerely hope that Microsoft
will remedy this problem in Longhorn.

OS/2 was a joint venture of both Microsoft and IBM. They departed
ways - MS further developed Windows and IBM continued with OS/2.
Lot more history to it than that - but you can read up on all of it
for yourself.

IBM has better things to do than develop an OS in order to give MS
competition. I too wish they would, but it's not going to happen. MS
will continue its hard ball tactics until consumers learn the only way
to break a monopoly is to quit purchasing their products. And don't
expect a sympathetic Republican majority government in the US to be of
any help.

Yup, understood, I have dealt with System commander (from V Communications)
in a prior incarnation of the same problem (which was DOS 6.22 versus Win 95)
some years ago. Now I just have two computers, one XP and one Win 98SE
based, each with its own set of problems. Anyway, nice rambling onto
various subjects... I used
IBM DOS and OS/2, on some client's computers, gee, that's more than 10 years
ago now. Or even longer.. like when "client" meant a person you did business
with, not a piece of software, ....

That IBM sold it's desktop computer to that chinese company, it makes me
wonder why no one from "HomelandSecurity" or the "National Security Advisers
office" made even the slightest "peep" about it. But, "that's just me".
Why China is still a "most
favored nation" by UN standards, is another one of these "space oddities"...
so, uhm, I could ramble on, too... about Mexico, Argentina, Europe, Iraq, ,
but not today..

Thanks!

Very True...I found that to be the case. Go to Sun Java's site and read the
info on troubleshooting....I had to configure Sun's java with proxy and port
and now it seems to be working...I have kept MSJVM and use that also, it will
be supported with security updates till September 2007. Sun's does not seem
to be as user friendly. Hope this assists you.
