MS Java Virtual Machine Removal

L

Lee

I use Windows XP Home edition on a stand-a-lone computer. No networking,
just me and my PC.

I ran across this article in Optimizing Windows XP. It says it's a good idea
to remove MS Java Virtual Machine.

I downloaded the tool but am hesitant to use it without getting some expert
advise. I have Sun's Java program, it came with my Presario, as well as MS's
Virtual machine.

MSJVM Removal Tool - Download - Home Page
One of the worst Spyware infections (CoolWebSearch) occurs due to an exploit
in Microsoft's discontinued Java Virtual Machine v1.1.4. To protect yourself
uninstall MSJVM using this tool and install Sun's Java J2SE 5.0 JRE (v1.5.0)
instead. If you have any problems use Sun's Java Upgrade Guide and then
Sun's Java Test Page to confirm it is installed properly.

in Microsoft's discontinued Java Virtual Machine v1.1.4.

Is this the last edition of MSJVM available?

If you want to use Sun JVM on MSIE without uninstalling MS JVM, you
can use the Java applet in Control.

In the version of Sun JVM I have, 1.5.0 beta 2 you click the advanced
sheet, hit <applet> tag support and check MSIE.

This should switch off MSJVM in MSIE and use Sun JVM instead. If you
want to go back to MSJVM, you can just uncheck MSIE in the control
applet.

Yes, it's the last version of MSJVM. I will try your suggestion.

I would not agree that it is something to do. If it is not used it
will be doing no more than occupying a little disk space. You can set
the Sun control panel applet's Browser page to use Sun with IE, or turn
that off and get the MS one for those pages that only work with that. I
would not bother to install the MS one if you did not have it, but don't
remove it

Thanks Alex. :)

You can still get infected so long as MSJVM is on your system.
Installing Sun's version without first removing MSJVM does not protect
you and does not "switch off" MSJVM, it is still their and can still be
exploited. Uninstalling MSJVM is the only true protection against CWS
infection.

However, be warned to have the latest Sun Java version because their are
critical security warnings in some earlier versions.
<sigh, the fight against the computer user and the hacker continues on>

FWIW, I've found some sites/embedded applets don't work with Sun's version -
only with MS's.

Frank,
I am with you on the Sun not being able to open some pages... Sometime
back I installed and tried to view my own website and NONE of the applets
would open properly using SUN Java... I then did a full install of 3805,
3809, 3810 JVM and all was well.. It would be nice if SUN would open these
pages considering the conflicts between the two companies..

Dan,
See my reply above in this thread to Frank J..
Sun just won't work on my own website. Go to the smokydog site below and
click on NEXT lantern, on page 2 do the same and then on page 3, click on
the PIX lantern and use the NEXT lanterns at the bottom of each page till
you finish the sequence and see how many will open for you using SUN... On
this computer, Sun will NOT open them. All I get is a grey applet window
with no action.. I had followed ALL of Suns instructions very carefully as
for the install of the latest they had to offer and none worked, so I just
stay with MSJVM and it works perfectly.

The Java applet on the first page in your signature works fine here.

Frank,
Did you try following the sequence thru about 6 of the pages? Most of
them
won't work with Sun... I have had a couple people tell me that they opened
fine
on there machines using Sun, but this machine will NOT open them using
Sun...
I wish it would..
Dell XPS Gen 2, 1 GB ram, 3 GB processor, 250 MB video card, dual monitors
(Trinitron 19's). One hot rod machine..
Thanks for your reply as always.

Sorry, I broke my satellite connection, so I'm on dial up right now and as I
get in to your site it just takes too long to load a page.

Frank, how does a satellite connection get broken? I thought it was even
better than cable?

You remind me of myself and tinkering with my settings, configuration, and
software all the time. (I have a dual boot 98SE and XP Pro. computer and
the two operating systems are on seperate drives with 98SE being in Fat32
and XP being in NTFS.) For example, I just had to tinker with the boot.ini
so that it would read "Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition" instead of just
"Microsoft Windows." at the start of my computer. In this case, my
tinkering was successful but I have decided to be more careful about backing
up in the future and I have decided to purchase GoBack by Symantec to allow
me to restore both my 98SE drive and my XP Pro. drive when necessary. Have
a great day and thanks for the response. It is greatly valued and
appreciated. I hope you get your computer working again and maybe another
MVP in this newsgroup could help you with your trouble if you cannot figure
it out yourself. :>

Frank,
Sorry to hear of your breakage.... Happens to the best and/or worst of
us. <BG>
Thanks for the reply.

Those pages work fine with the latest version of Sun's Java v1.5.0_01. I
can not stress enough about how serious the exploits are in any version
of MSJVM. You can get infected with CoolWebSearch by simply opening the
wrong web page, it is that easy. If you do not remove it, it is only a
matter of time before you will get infected. MSJVM should not be on
anyone's PC.

If the install is not working right try it again. Uninstall ALL
versions of Sun's Java from Add/Remove, delete the Java folder in
"C:\Program Files\Java" and reboot. Uninstall MSJVM with the removal
tool, reboot. In windows explorer go to Tools, Folder Options, View
Tab, check "Show Hidden Files and Folders", check "Hide Protected
Operating Systems and Files". Delete everything in all the Temp folders
for all the acounts on your PC "C:\Documents and Settings\(account
name)\Local Settings\Temp". Then run CCleaner. Finally redownload the
latest version of Sun's Java v1.5.0_01 or newer, reboot and then
retest. You can use the test link in the guide.
