MS is preparing for RC1 release

C

Colin Barnhorst

Why, Chad? Just because they announced RC1 availability in Q3 and release
it in Q3? You don't make sense. Who cares whether it is the last week of
August, second week of September, or Halloween. It is all still Q3.

Such things as regressions tests. I am no expert on testing, but I know the
difference between scientific methods and anecdotal reporting which we do
here.

C

Colin Barnhorst

I didn't say it had to. I have no opinion about that. It is the Vista Beta
program managers who have been telling the TechBeta folks flat out that they
are going to release a preview build to TechBeta about now and I guess they
know what they are intending to do. The TechBeta folks have already been
told the type of testing needed from them when the build is available.

C

Colin Barnhorst

No. Builds have been delayed several times in the past 15 months for lots
of reasons, only some of which involved the code.

Are they the fulfillment company that distributed the dvd's to the CPP folks that requested mailed dvd's?
Catalysis is a company with several locations in Seattle that often develops MSFT programs to distribute their software and their promotions and their freebies from meetings. It used to have a great bee hive flash video on its site but I have been unable to find it using Web archives since it was taken down.

Jason,
Hi,
I followed that microsoft.catalysis.com and it appears to be a MSFT partner-looks on the up and up.

Jeff
Just a side note. It looks like there may be some scam sites that may try to get your personal info as it appears that you are going to order RC1.

I don't know if it is a scam site as of yet, but on the safe side, beware.

Please note the Contact Us link @ the bottom of the page is not a @microsoft.com email address. It is a @microsoft.catalysis.com
As it looks by posts on different web sites, Microsoft has 2 links ready for when RC1 is released. This was posted by Firecapt on Pro-Networks.org

Colin,
All well and good.
And it seems in all this excitement; that i've lost the fact that;indeed
this is a beta.
That being said; just a reflection;if I may
When this is all said and done; Vista for better or worse;probably will not
be my o.s.
As before this; I have an acceptable version of XP Pro;already paid
for;so there really is no justification;on my part;to spend the 3-400$ to
get Vista;when;even at this late stage;builds are FAILING standards; and;to
top it off; beta testing is a joke; unless you are in the "priveledged"
groups.
It's been fun; but unless HUGE improvements are realized; I'll wait to
see what "Vienna" has to offer.

BTW; Where's the link for "Vienna Beta Tester's"?? -lol :)

If past practice holds for Vienna, you need to self-nominate yourself or get
invited based on your participation in other testing. I suggest that you go
to Microsoft Connect and click on the Available Connections link. Take any,
even remotely, interesting beta and sign up. When you are in the beta,
contribute. Microsoft does track participation in the betas on Connect and
judges suitability for other betas based on your track record. For example,
right now there is an exFAT beta coming up and almost anybody ought to be
able to participate in it. While you are on Connect, find the
(e-mail address removed) link and email them your interest in testing the next
OS.

Just some ideas.

Colin,
Thanks; am well aware of MSFT's modus operandi;as it were;in connection
with beta testing.
That was sort of a humorous post script;is all

Such things as regressions tests. I am no expert on testing, but I know the

here.

What's the REAL difference between "anecdotal reports" and "scientific
reports"? Formal record keeping. That's all.

Those who use so-called "scientific methods" to decide that something
is "broken" are substantially the same as those who use "day to day"
"testing" at home or the office to decide when something is broken.
The bugs are the same, whether they are noted and reported formally or
not, and whether they are found by so-called "laymen" or "experts".

So-called "experts" and "scientists" just refuse to accept
"anecodatal" evidence because the common rank and file are not in
their little "clubs", with MSMF, BMF, BMOC, PHD or whatever after
their names.

ANYONE can tell something is wrong when it refuses to work as it
should. You certainly don't need years of formal education for that.
But "scientists and experts" like to keep everyone bowing down to them
as if they are somehow DiFFFERENT from the rest of humanity.

Haha, I like that response. When exactly do you think it will be available to
the technical beta people on Connect?

I'd definately mark that one as a scam. It doesn't follow the format of any
microsoft website...

In fact, it even states on the bottom that it is not hosted by Microsoft,
but hosted FOR Microsoft by Catalysis.

Not only that, but as you have already mentioned, the contact email
addresses are not @microsoft.com but instead @microsoft.catalysis.com

I reported it as a phishing website already... I wonder what they'll have to
say about that.

Some of the testers have a browser window open on the download site and are
refreshing every few minutes. I think they are a day or two early. As of
last Friday it looked like about a week. But of course MS will not give an
exact date until the builds go up on the servers. It's quite a subject of
conjecture over in TB.

C

Colin Barnhorst

Where do you get that idea?

Take a look at a sample testing doc used with partners to ensure device
drivers meet WHQL standards. This paradigm is one of the ones used
internally as well. The internal testing methodology is not public as far
as I know, but it is thorough and mathematically very sound. It is not a
matter of record keeping.

I like the way your site is coming together. The look is really nice. One
complaint. The floating ads on the forum are very annoying.
