MS AS Won't Show On Desktop

For some reason I can't get MS AntiSpyware to "display"
on my mchine. I installed it and it runs in the tray. It
shows that it is trying to block a few items, but when I
choose "Open Microsoft AntiSpyware" I get the splash
screen for a second or two and then it disappears.

I've seen this once, on a poorly performing VPC, and didn't have the
patience to try to dig further into it.

If you restart in safe mode, can you get proper functionality, and if you
then restart in normal mode, does that experience carry through?
