Hi guys, does perhaps anybody know why my AntiSpyware doesn't stay opend.
Every time i run it manually by doubleclick on ASware icon it's ok. but
whatever i do it just doesn't stay open or let say that it doesn't want to
stay running in sys tray or in system itself. I always just closed it on the
cross in right up corner of the window and ASware countinuing running in
system and I could see it in sys tray.
tnx, gregor

Hello Gregor:

You can repair Windows AntiSpyware using Add or Remove Programs in Control
Panel. Click Microsoft AntiSpyware and click Change. Click Next, and then
click Updªte.
Let us know how it works ºut.

HI !

There are a few, not widely distributed, viruses that attempt to disable
Microsoft Antispyware. An antivirus scan wouldn't be a bad idea. There are
also bug(s) which result in the tray icon not appearing when it should or
appearing when it should not.

One of these bugs can be circumvented by logging out of XP and then signing
back in. If that gets the icon to reappear, this is an XP OS bug, as I
understand it.

Bill,

Now what if you are the only registered user of XP?
I'm having what I think is the same issue with Defender (Love the name BTW
as I've always referred to myself as the Part Time Defender of the Universe,
so...thanks guys for semi-immortalizing me)

Only the icon does not appear. Now it seems that the program IS working as I
am getting several messages.

Do you think it may be because of another BETA porgram I was workign with?
(i.e. ONECARE) I've removed the program after an issue I had with my system
TOTALLY UNRELATED to either Defender(GAWD! I LOVE IT!!!) or OneCare.

I'd appreciate your response.

(Did i mention how much I like the name DEFENDER???)

I'm running OneCare on a number of machines which also have "beta1 of what
will become" Defender on them. I've not seen this issue, so I don't connect
the two of them.

In your case, an update or repair install may help--start, control panel,
add or remove programs, Microsoft Antispyware:

You can either choose Change, then Update, or click on the blue wording
about support, and then click on the repair button which is revealed. I
have no information about whether those two buttons do anything
qualitatively different or not--take your choice!

Hey guys !

Just try to make this clear. My antispyware is the only antispyware program,
i also don't have any other beta programs. My comupter was reinstalled 4 days
ago so it's still clean of every other problems. I scaned it also with
Kaspersky antivirus and online Panda virus scan and symantec online virus
scan. I aslo twiced reinstalled my antispyware, logging of and on just
doesn't work, the program keeps closing and I don't mean with that just tray
in right down corner in start-menu row. The service itself keeps shuting
down... this is becoming really anoying :)

well, good morning :) hehe

Hi Gregor;
Sorry your having such problems, could you post your diagnostics here? MSAS >
Help > About > Diagnostics
Perhaps we can spot something amiss in there.

Another few thoughts, MSAS is supposed to start when your system boots... and
of course automatically show up in the ellusive system tray as an icon, but you
say that you have to double click the icon to manually start it, yet it should
be automatically started & running at boot-up as evidenced by a little icon in
the systray. Perhaps you mean open the MSAS application window rather than
start?... so would that be the icon on the desktop or the icon on the systray in
the lower right of your screen that your clicking? Try double clicking the icon
in the systray if it's available. What happens if you use MSAS Advanced Tools >
System Explorers > Startup Programs ? Does gcasServ.exe show as your startup
program for the MSAS application? I'm a little confused by "service shutting
down" as well... do you mean in Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) the gcasDTServ.exe
and gcasServ.exe Processes are no longer running? Sorry for all the Qs, I just
want to be sure we understand everything you've told us.

At the moment my MSAS works fine, so I don't know where was the problem.
However I got the feeling that every time I moved MSAS icon from desktop to
another map, MSAS wasn't booted up next time. Ok I know that's the most
stupid Idea becouse I am an IT but still, I had to tell you :) NO no I don't
mean open the MSAS I have to start it. When i doubleclick on the shortcut
MSAS starts and the application opens, but when I close the application the
service stops also. And yes the problem is also that I don't have any systry
icon of MSAS and no, in startup programs gcasServ.exe also vanished :) and in
Task Manager also disapear when I close the application.

No problem about those questions I am happy for your effort, but as I said
at the moment it works fine... however I don't know for how long. I'll let
you know

Hi again, Gregor;
OK, here's what I'd do if the problems re-occur, but I'm falling back on some
old problem fix resolutions. I'm not absolutely sure it will cure your problem
but it's worth a try, I should think.

from Bill Sanderson (with my additions):

1) Uninstall Microsoft AntiSpyware via Add/Remove.

2) Delete the \program files\Microsoft AntiSpyware folder and all
subfolders. You will lose access to any Quarantined items, history, and
customized settings. Also delete in C:\windows\system32 the following files:

GCCollection.dll
hashlib.dll
gcUnCompress.dll

3) Reinstall Microsoft AntiSpyware, downloading the setup files first and then
later install from the download, while logged on as the
admin authority user who will customarily use the program. Install to a
non-standard folder i.e.. C:\program files\MSAS not to the default location.

I know you mentioned uninstalling and reinstalling before, but the key here
is step 2--one or more of the .gcd files that direct the programs behavior
is either corrupted, or has permissions set so that it isn't usable.

Finally, if your running a software firewall from Mikolaj Kaminski (with my
corrections):

Also check the firewall, it should allow MSAS processes to
access the Internet. These processes are:

1. GiantAntiSpywareMain.exe (the primary Microsoft AntiSpyware application)
2. GiantAntiSpywareUpdater.exe (provides functionality to update the latest
spyware definitions)
3. gcasDtServ.exe (provides access to SpyNet for reporting unknown applications)
4. gcasServAlert.exe (provides access to SpyNet for reporting unknown
applications)
5. gcasSWUpdater.exe (should also be allowed to access the Internet for updates)

If it breaks again, I'd uninstall, delete the \program files\microsoft
antispyware folder and all sub-folders, and then reinstall. You will lose
access to all quarantined items, history, and customized settings.
