MS Antispyware Beta 1

After clean installing the Antispyware Beta1 version I have lost access to
the System Explorers that did work with the Beta-version. All other functions
seem to work normally. Is this a bug? Who can help me.

What other security or antivirus software is installed on this system?

See if these steps fix the issue:

1) Open up a command prompt (start -> run -> cmd)
2) Type in the following "regsvr32 msvbvm60.dll" (without the quotes).
3) Close and re-open Windows AntiSpyware

Bill,
Thanks for the help. It worked perfectly. Any idea why this happened? I am
just curious. Thanks again

That was why I asked the question which you didn't answer. This symptom is
most commonly seen in conjunction with other software--often software from
Symantec which has either been installed or upgaded before the symptom
arises.

Hi Bill,

I too was awaiting a response from Willem as to what other Security software was installed.
While this issue has arisen many times on this board, and it's obvious that something is
un-registering the VBRuntime dll file for these folks, I'm still not convinced that the problem is
tied universally with Symantec products.

I say this because I've been testing this software right along with the rest of you folks from the
beginning on two machines here at home. I have Symantec products on both those machines,
"Norton Antivirus 2002" on one machine and "Norton SystemWorks 2004" on the other.
I have yet to experience this problem with the VBRuntime file being un-registed on either Machine
with the install of the Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1 product.

Perhaps it is being caused by later versions of the Symantec products than those I have installed?

While this is certainly not empirical evidence that all Symantec products are not responsible
for this issue, I do feel confident that the two products mentioned above are not responsible....
at least as evidenced by my experiences with the twq products mentioned above.

Sorry for not answering to the questions before. Ihave running Sygate
Firewall, Norton System Works 2004 and MS Antispyware beta1.

Thanks Willem,

I also have Norton SystemWorks 2004 installed on one of my machines here and I have
never experienced this issue of the VBRuntime DLL file msvbvm60.dll being
uninstalled||un-registered during an install of MSAS Beta 1.

I assume you had the Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect feature dissabled during your
install of MSAS Beta 1?

Donald,
Ik had the viruschecker not even installed at that moment.
By the way I have just posted another question because I encounter a very
strange problem af ter the installation of all the programs and Windows
updates.
Could you please give this question a close look for me. You and Bill seem
to have much more experience. Thanks
Willem

Hi Willem,

If you didn't have Norton SystemWorks 2004 installed at the time you installed MASA Beta 1,
I would imagine that this would absolve Symantec as being the root cause to the VBRuntime
file being uninstalled||Unregistered.

As to your other question, I did see it posted this morning. As I read your question you would
like the Security Center from issuing Alerts about your Antivirus program. This can be done
by going to the Control Panel and opening up the Security Center.

Click on the "Recommendations..." button on the Antivirus section and put a tick in the box
that says "I have an antivirus program that I'll monitor myself", this will prevent Windows
from issuing alerts about your antivirus program.

If this is not what you are referring to perhaps Bill can offer other advise?

Hallo Donald,
Thanks so far. The Antispyware is running again.
My other problem is where it all started. Last week I notived that I had no
control anymore over the messages I receive from the security centre about
antivirus level. Normally you get a pop-up that says that your Computer could
have a possible hazatd because the antivirusprogram is not up-to-date or not
running yet. Once the antivirusprogram starts running the popdisplay
disappers. One could handle this with the possibility that comes in the
Security Centre. At the lieft site of the screen you get the opportunity to
choose how to you want these messages to com up or not come up. Well that is
what I miss. After installation of all these programs I have the sameproblem
as I had last week. So a lot of hard work for nothing. What happened along
the way of reinstalling all the programs? Why is my computer part of a domain
with a networksupervisor or so? Can it hurt me?
Thanks for being so patient with me.

Hi Donald,
Some extra information on the other question. See my extra input with the
question. I solved the problem myself.

I've also run Microsoft Antispyware alongside a beta version of Norton
Antivirus 2006 (with the antispyware piece, as I recall) and not seen this
symptom.

I'm certain that not all Norton/Symantec users see this symptom, or it would
appear more than it does here. However, most people for whom we've gotten
an answer on the question have run a Symantec product as well.

I'm not trying to assess blame, and I also can say that this issue will not
carry through to beta2, so it isn't worth worrying about much.

I've not been able to give much time to the groups today--will try to take a
look eventually--glad you solved it!

It is beyond me why Iusers keep computing when theyhave to put up with MSFT
not being able to come out with a non-BETA version of spyware, and even when
it puts out a product, it does not work, or corrupts ones machine. Does
anyone know of a good anti spyware product?

If you want to blame MS for this that is okay with me. But why are you want
to this without giving your name. Do not any answer on your question on a
good antispyware product.

Check comparative reviews in major publications. As recently as last month,
as I recall, reviewers were still giving Microsoft Antispyware high marks.

Bill,
Thanks for all your support.
All I wanted to do is to make a statement about people not giving their
name, habing a problem with MS-products and asking help to find spyware
software. I am very happy with the MSAS even if it has some problem areas.

I withdraw from the discussion now.

I was responding th "why." I felt I should do that 'cause I'd earlier
written a tongue-in-cheek piece wondering whether running Microsoft software
on hardware corrupts the hardware to the point of being unable to run Linux,
but decided not to send it. So I thought I should send a "straight"
response instead.

In general, I feel that if people don't give their names they are either
ashamed or afraid. Both reasons are foolish. If rou can't give a name you
shouldn't write to newsgroups. The MVP's are more open to critisism and
rude posts but they still don't try to hide their identy.
