mrxsmb.sys problems

G

Guest

windows 2000 SP4 with all the patches.

Athlon 900MHz, 512KB RAM, 120GB Disk

I have not installed any new hardware or software recently.

I have just encountered a boot-up problem

the windows 2000 screen appears and the progress bar moves to 100%
but then a BLUE screen appears with the following message;

============START===============

STOP: c000026c {unable to load device driver}
\systemroot\system32\drivers\mrxsmb.sys device driver could not be
loaded.
error status was 0xc0000221

if this was the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart
your computer. if this screen appears again

follow theses steps:

check new hardware... etc.

============END=================

I can boot into SAFE mode and see all my hard drives and the data

Booting to know last configuration doesn't work either.

I copied mrxsmb.sys from my other system and put it onto the faulty
system

the one from my good system was 434,976 Bytes in size
and the one
from the faulty system was 385,024 bytes
not sure if this was a good idea but done anyway now!

now the error message on the blue screen reads

============START===============

STOP: c0000263 {driver entry point not found}
the \systemroot\system32\drivers\mrxsmb.sys device driver could
not locate the entry point RxSpinDownMRxDispatcher in driver rdbss.sys.

if this was the first time you've seen this stop error screen,
restart your computer. if this screen appears again follow theses steps:

check new hardware... etc.

============END=================

I put the original mrxsmb.sys back.

and ran trial version taskmanager16.exe that I read about on googol for
this problem.

it did not report ant problems

I have booted from my win2k cdrom and selected the repair option
I don't have an emergency boot disc (what ever they are)
so I let it auto repair

but this has not cured the problem.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Could I have a hardware fault?

Try replacing with a service pack four version.

To extract the service pack files without installing them, execute
J:\W2kSP4\W2KSP4_EN.exe /x
Then when prompted, specify a directory to hold the extracted files.

Thanks for that.

I have downloaded the file and found mrxsmb.sy_

do I just rename it mrxsmb.sys or do I have to do something to it, is it
compressed some how?

I tried uncompress mrxsmb.sy_ but mrxsmb.sys not on my system! don't
know if it should be or not!

D

Dave Patrick

expand E:\i386\mrxsmb.sy_ %systemroot%\system32\drivers\mrxsmb.sys

would expand a new copy to the \system32\drivers directory.

I just renamed the file from mrxsmb.sy_ to mrxsmb.sys

and copied to my faulty system but I now get the following error message
stop: c000026c

can load mrxsmb.sys

error status was 0xc000012

do I have to reformat and start again?

What a pain.

Thanks for any help

That won't work. The file must be expanded. In case you can't see my other
reply;

expand E:\i386\mrxsmb.sy_ %systemroot%\system32\drivers\mrxsmb.sys

would expand a new copy to the \system32\drivers directory.

Thanks, I knew it was something like that.

But it didn't work, I got the following error message;

STOP: c0000263 {driver entry point not found}
the \systemroot\system32\drivers\mrxsmb.sys device driver could
not locate the entry point RxSpinDownMRxDispatcher in driver rdbss.sys.

So I removed the ethernet network card, on the off chance that it was
somehow causing the problem, getting desperate here...

but no change, still wont boot.

Is this some sort of virus?

thanks

Do you also have the rollup installed? If so you have the wrong version of
mrxsmb.sys

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831128/

As I see it you have two choices. Copy the file from another machine that
also has the rollup installed or call product support.

What is the rollup?

I update the system regularly using the update option in Internet
explorer.

Is this the rollup?

Thanks

Thanks for the help.

But I continually had problems so I decided to reinstall win 2k from the
CD-ROM.

unfortunately I ran into problems there, I seems my CD-ROM is scratched
and it wont load certain files during installation.

Is there any way I can get a replacement CD-ROM by sending my original
to Microsoft or one of its agents.

Thanks

D

Dave Patrick

As long as it isn't OEM. OEM replacements must come from the OEM vendor.
Might also be the CD-Rom drive.

Thanks for the help.

Yes it is a standard version of win 2k not an OEM.

AS far as the cdrom drive goes, I tried to put win XP on it to see it
was a hardware issue, the win XP disk is new, used once to put XP on my
other system. Its an OEM. I just wanted to check the hardware I knew I
couldn't register it.

But that also had read errors so I am going to put a new cdrom drive in
the faulty system and try and re-install 2k on it using that cdrom
drive.

I have to admit I though the scratches on my win2k CD were very minor
and was surprised there were errors. But CDs can be temperamental.

I assume I can borrow a friends win2k cdrom and use my product key to
install it.

I am assuming the media is the same and as long as I use my product key
them I am still legal.

You're welcome. Yes you can use the borrowed CD and your key as long as it
isn't an OEM
