MPG2 to AVI Conversion WORKS

P

Pop Rivet

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

OK! I haven't seen anyone corroborate the information
the John Kelly, Papa-something, and a couple of others
have been reiterating repeatedly over and over <g>, but
.... I WILL!

I just converted a 421 Meg MPEG II file to a DVD-AVI
and ALL OF MY MOVIEMAKER2 PROBLEMS DISAPPEARED!!!!!
They're completelyh gone! Every one of them, even the
annoyances. Every single problem and complaint I had,
just, well, went away! I made sure I used one of my
problem worst-case clips, too, so ... draw your own
conclusions.
I am SO glad I found this group! It's also
extremely UNfortunate that MS didn't/doesn't see fit to
make this little "detail" plain in their
documentation. If it's in there, I never found it.

There is a slight COST for getting rid of the long
pauses, apparent but not quite freezeups (if you're
patient enough), downright freezeps though I haven't
had any lately, et al, and gaining FAST editing
capabilities:
The file size went from 421 Meg to 5.235 GIGabytes!
How it handles a file that big so quickly is beyond me,
but it does it well.
I used TRex to do the conversion because it's all I
had handy at the moment, plus had it set for speed of
rendering, rather than a quality rendering. I don't
know how long the conversion took because I was doing
other things while it ran, but I did notice TRex used a
consistant 50% of my processor time. It must have
taken about an hour, I'd say, so it's not a fast
conversion, at least with the freebie app I used. It'd
probably be faster if I gave it more processor time,
but ... nope, don't wanna limit myself that much.
I have a 2.4 Gig machine & 7200 rpm drives, so
ymmv.
OH, and the QUALITY of the output was BETTER than
I've had yet with editig the MPGs: You can't tell the
converted from the original VHS tape I recorded from!
Plus, I used the Speed, not the Quality setting. So,
it's AVI for me from now on. Believe me folks, it's an
amazing and wonderful fix for MPGs.

So, like Papa, John, et al, lemme say - GIT RID O' THEM
MPGs FOR EDITTING! Or, go get another video editor,
but hey, MM2's free! A small price to pay for a free
video editor, IMO.

NOW I can go ahead and make some real Home Movies!
Well, at least as good as MM will let me. It's pretty
much adequate for almost all uses, and if you've never
used anything else, you'll never miss a thing.

Scuse me; gonne set up the rest of the clips for
conversion and go to bed!

Very Best Regards,

POP

Hey Pop,

Thanks for sharing your results, and for the tip
about TRex. I just downloaded the trial version
of TRex and used it to convert an MPEG-2 video to
DV-AVI.

It runs very nicely as a background task, as it
runs by default as a low-priority task. I was
able to continue *working* while it silently
ran in the background. Nice tool! :)

Here's the download link I found, in case anyone
else is interested in trying it. It costs $14
if you want to keep using it after the 60-day
trial period expires.
