MPEG to WMV conversion no longer in sync!

I just ran into a sync issue which didn’t exist before. Basically, I’m using
Hauppauge’s WinTV 2000 to capture some TV shows in MPEG format. Previously I
was able to just drop the MPEG file into Movie Maker 2.1 and convert it into
a 1.0 Mbps WMV file which was about 10 times smaller than the MPEG file (2.5
Gigs -> 250 Megs) and everything was fine.

Recently, I tried doing the same thing but I noticed that the audio was
gradually getting out of sync with the video to a point where in the second
half of the video you would hear people talk way before their lips started to
move.

When I ran into this, the first thing I checked was the WinTV capture
settings but they were the same as before. So as an experiment, I converted
one of the older MPEG files which I had successfully converted to WMV
previously without any sync issues (I had forgotten to delete the MPEG file
after the conversion) but this time, the generated WMV file had the audio out
of sync with the video.

So I knew that something had changes in the system because the same MPEG
file and the same conversion process that generated a fully in-sync WMV
before, was now generating a completely out of sync WMV file now. So started
looking online and read about MM 2.1 filters and I started playing around
with those but I’ve had no luck in generating an in-sync movie.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Consider yourself lucky that you got it to work previously. WMM doesn't like
MPG files too much.
Maybe try converting them to AVI to begin with and then editing them with
WMM.

sorry, really unable to give you any answer why your videos are now out of
sync, except to offer: try converting them with windows media encoder (also
free from Microsoft) if your not editing them, just converting, media
encoder works great and seems to be much quicker. also if you do this alot,
I would suggest looking into BeyondTV from snapstream. this turns your PC
into your own persona TiVo system. record programs from your TV card
automatically and you choose the format and quality settings. (I record
some shows high quality for "family Viewing" and some lower quality to watch
on my pocketPC) great piece of software !!

Thanks guys, I'll try that. As for media Encoder, I did actually download
media encoder 9 and try it but for a 1Mbps VBR video and CD quality VBR
audio, it took 2 passes and hours and hours to encode. I have a P4 1.6 Ghz
and 1 Gig of RAM, so it's not that out of date. Am I doing anything wrong? In
my experience, movie maker encoded the same video much much faster!

Your not doing anything wrong. Media Encoder is rather slow encoding but it
does an outstanding job as far as avoiding the sync problem your currently
having. WMM may have done the job faster but, as you found out, faster isn't
necessarily better.
