mpeg not working in ppt

I am building a power point presenation and want to include mpegs. It works
on my desk top pc but not on my laptop. I use xp and office xp on both
machines (same version). when I insert the mpeg into the laptop presentation
it simply goes black. The mpeg will play on the laptop in windows media
player and real player. I wonder if it might be to do with the fact that I
have not installed xp service pack 1 and 2 on the desk top but have on the
laptop. Could some security fix be causing the problem.
It is nothing to do with linking as I inserted the mpeg from the same folder
on my laptop as the saved version of the power point.

I'm an MD, Ph.D, a neurosurgeon, and have the same problem with MPEG2 videos
during powerpoint presentations. Although it runs on windows media player, it
does not on the presentation. It seems only a black screen on the slide. In
contrast, MPEG1 movies run well. I tried to use another application (left
click on the movie folder, chose'open with', assign another program like a
winDVD) but it did not worked either. I think this problem is spesific to
windows XP professional version. I'm able to open all MPEG2 videos on the
same office XP version when I tried it on my other two system one working
with windows ME and the other with XP home editions. I wrote obout this
problem few weeks ago to MS solution center, but I could not get any feed
back. There is no any related article on the official web site. Hoping to get
any answer this time. I will try to load some additional codecs to solve it.
I installed servispacks and all updates for Windows XP (professional) and
office XP, however it failed to solve this problem.

The physicians I work with daily also sometimes have problems with video in
PPT, but it's not related to the MD/PhD, I promise. :)

MPEG2 requires a specialized codec, and these don't work as well with PPT.
The actual software to create these (wDVD, etc.) can cause conflicts, too.

I recommend that you start here: http://www.echosvoice.com/tshoot_video2.htm
I also recommend that you stick with MPEG1 as opposed to MPEG2, as they're
more universally compatible. I believe the elecard decoder has been
recommended here if you're going to deal with MPEG2. http://www.elecard.com

In addition to the troubleshooting link above, read
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm to
understand how PPT handles multimedia.
