MP9 "recently patched," now won't play audio files

I am running on NT 2000 Professional, a "lowly Pentium III
700" with 512 mb RAM and plenty of HD space.

Audio card is a LynxONE (www.lynxstudio.com), drivers are
current.

Updated to MP9 when it came out... recently (like 2 days
ago) updated to the latest Microsoft "patch" to plug a bug.

All worked well for a day or so. For no reason
(detectable), MP9 now 'appears' to play (flashing
animations!), no audio comes out, regardless of file
format/type [mp3, wma, etc.].

The sound card works properly for all other apps (ACID,
MIDI sequencing, DAW multitrack, etc.).

Is an uninstall/reinstall in order of either MP9 or my
sound card drivers? (there IS DirectX support in the
drivers, but I think the standard Windows Media protocol
was in use for MP8. That doesn't appear to be an option
for MP9).

Thoughts?

Well, OK...

displaying the appropriate animation for the
visualization, which indicates that the file is being
played "in the mind of the application..."

but no audio comes forth. All the other Audio apps I use
are still functioning properly.

Flashing?
http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#vdriver
should fix that... for the audio,
http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html#dsound
might be the good starting point.

Yeah, that link explicitly addresses the "but other apps work" fallacy. :)
Different apps work differently.

So what would you suggest... uninstall/reinstall WMP9?
