mp3 player

When I hook up my mp3 player to the usb cable, the following happens.
In My Computer, it recognizes the player, then in about 5 seconds the
computer shuts down.
any advice would be welcome

Do you have more than ONE port on your PC? Try another port
to see if the same thing happens. If it does, you may have a
corrupt PCI USB device. You can go to Device Manager in the
Control Panel>Systems>Hardware tab and disable all USB ports,
then reboot your system and all ports should be enabled again, if not,
you can manually enable them. Try it. If they still do not work,
uninstall the USB ports in the Device Manager and reboot, WindowsXP
should(?) reinstall them automatically. If not, you'll probably need to
visit Circuit City, Best Buy or Radio Shack.

Thanx Byte, I tried everything you said but still no worky worky. I changed
usb cables, I changed the ports for my printer and it works on either port,
I just can't get that stupid mp3 player to work. I'm totally frustrated.
