Mozilla extension unnstaller extension

J

John Corliss

In case all you Mozilla, Firefox and Thunderbird users aren't aware of
this extension, here's the link:

http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/more-info/extuninstall

or:

http://jgillick.nettripper.com/extuninstaller/

From the latter:

"*What is Extension Uninstaller?*
This extension provides a friendly user interface for uninstalling any
extension installed in Mozilla, Firefox and Thunderbird.

Until now you there wasn't an easy way to uninstall extensions from
your browser or email client, except for doing it manually. This
automatically uninstalls any extension installed in Mozilla, Firefox
or Thunderbird.

*How is this extension different than other uninstallers?*
Currently there are a handful of uninstaller extensions out there, why
should you use this one? From my research there are currently 2 types
of uninstallers: THE jslib uninstaller API, and the extensions that
use it. The extensions that use it, or "wrapper" extensions, just
provide a nice user interface to the jslib's API. In my experiences,
the jslib uninstaller always crashes when I try to uninstall something
in Firefox. It also closes all your browser windows, so you have to
stop what you're doing.

I have built this uninstaller from the ground up, trying to make it as
versitile and complete as I can. In my tests it doesn't crash and you
don't have to stop what you're doing to use it. The uninstaller
completely uninstalls content, skins and locales associated with the
targeted extension."

I use this and love it. The author did an amazing job. One of the
things I hated most about Mozilla extensions was how much of a pain it
is (was) to uninstall some of them. This tool rocks.

He's got some other really neat extensions here:

http://jgillick.nettripper.com/

I'm also going to try the Bandwidth Tester, Copy Plain Text, Open Long
Urls and TinyUrl Creator extensions.

I'm top posting to make this easier to notice:

This extension doesn't seem to list all of the extensions one has
installed (in my case, it didn't list the "Sidebar Toggle" extension.)
However, it does seem to work well otherwise.

What a "crock-o-chit". You "alternate" browser stalwarts need extensions
for "this" and extensions for "that", and when you finally figure out
that the extension is a load of "the proverbial", then you need another
extension to remove the other extension ?? ROFLMAO

Good luck ..... hope you enjoy all the time you spend "trying' to emulate
what I have already got.

You're not thinking of switching to Outlook Express are you?
;o)

No, but I am going to start promoting commercial software in this

Seriously, the reason I installed Maxthon is because I'm unable to use
verious features of my free Yahoo account when accessing it through
Mozilla. I also noticed that file downloads go MUCH MUCH faster if
they're done through IE on my system (YMMV). Maxthon takes care of
several problems IE forces you to endure. It's just another internet
tool though. I still use Mozilla mostly now that the novelty of a new
toy has worn off.

Two complaints I have about Maxthon:

1. updates are too frequent and installing a newer version over an
older one may or may not preserve the settings.

2. there's no help file (I am aware of the unofficial FAQ site though.)

On the plus side, I never have to use "naked" IE anymore.

And just what exactly is that other than a bad attitude?

I'd like to know what you have that allows you, for instance, to click
on any object on a website and make it disappear. That's a capability
that "Nuke Anything":

http://ted.mielczarek.org/code/mozilla/

gives you. This capability is very useful for reducing ads and even
non-ad clutter from a loaded webpage.

Or how about this one:

http://jgillick.nettripper.com/tinyurl/

which allows one to quickly copy to the clipboard a "tiny" url derived
from one of those huge website addresses like Microsoft is so fond of
using?

There are many, many other examples of such unique things one can do
with the right extensions in Mozilla.

FYI, Firefox now has this feature incorporated as a toolbar menu otion:

Tools > Extensions >

Pretty nifty. IMO, Firefox is starting to gain on the suite.

In my view, Firefox has done this (gain on the suite) for a while
already. It's just that firefox's options are much more well hidden to
preserve a clean look akin to IE.

What type of features are you talking about exactly? The yahoomail and
yahoogroups work fine with firefox. Should be the same with Mozilla.

I thought you discovered Tab browsing? Perhaps time to use it too in
mozilla together with multizilla?

The forward button doesn't work. Also a few other things. I forget.
It's been a while since I gave up trying to make it work and simply
started using IE to access the account.

Frankly, if I could disable tab browsing in Maxthon, I'd do it. I
*really* *really* don't like it at all.

It does work on me with firefox, strange.

Don't like tab browsing even in Maxthon? Oh dear, watch out for the
angry ,disbelieving Maxthon fans out there :)

Just be aware that it doesn't always do the trick. I was using it for
awhile, but ran into some extension conflicts, and it didn't completely
remove the offending extensions. So I had to resort to 'manual' means,
using instructions I got in the Mozilla forum. Those instructions are
foolproof. I think I posted them for you awhile back.

I just don't like tab browsing. Period. I like "open in a new window"
and alt-tabbing much better.

Well that's too bad. I'd really hoped this was the answer. I guess
what needs to happen is that the developers need to standardize the
location of extensions into the user profile folder.

Once I got used to being able to reopen closed tabs, open a whole group of
tabs at once, and moving tabs about, I was totally spoiled. I'd hate to
have to get along without it, now.

One window mode was all that I needed really. But with firefox I get all
of what you mention as well.
