Moz Tbird..emptied folder!!! no go!!

With all the ranting and raving about T-bird, I tried to install it on
my XP computer.
It would not work, and it emptied my "Freeware" folder! Dumped every
post I had
in it, but did NOT empty any of the others! People can say what they
will about OE
but my experience with it is that it is yet to be surpassed! I've had
no viruses or
other malware (mostly common sense), but for this machine at least,
Moz's T-bird
and Moz are big fat "No go's!"

I've tried other browsers and newsreaders, but this is the first time
I've ever had
this happen! EVERY post from my Freeware ng folder...gone! ;(

I use OE for mail and only in the past six months switched over for
newsreading to Xananews. OE is susceptible to mailbox corruption
sometimes. That is why most OE MVPs suggest against automatic
compaction of mailboxes; manual compaction is all right though. Is it
still visible in OE?

By chance was your Freeware folder a subfolder of the Inbox? If so
that is the worst place to keep any messages you want to save. The
Inbox is the most used .dbx file and henceforth has the most chance of
corruption than any other mailbox. Another possibility is sometimes
folder structures such as directory trees are not maintained and all
your mailboxes may be at the root level of your Thunderbird mailbox
tree.

Unfortunately, no! I even did a restore to an earlier date, but still
'no cigar'.

Yes, that's where they were: in a subfolder! ;( Live and learn I
suppose!
Thanks for the response.

Just restore your backup! You do have a backup don't you?
What happens if your hard drive fails, you will lose everything, then who
will you blame?
Take this experience as a warning.

That's the truth. I currently have two hard drives, the main one has two
partitions. I use XXCopy:

http://www.xxcopy.com/index.htm

to clone the first partition on the main drive to the backup (what I
call "RAID on demand"). This has saved my bacon so many times I've lost
count.

Note: I've read in this group of XXCopy not working quite right with XP.
Others have recommended DrvImagerXP 2.2 instead, but the Lexun website
is currently 404ed. However, many claim that XXCopy works just fine with
their copy of XP. Not sure if any related problems have anything to do
with the file system used or not.

Have you tried PHYLock from Terabyte? It's freeware and I think may
prevent the problems some people have had using XXCopy to cone
partitions. Art cones a partition twice to overcome the locked file
problem, I believe. This utiltiy should make that unnecessary.

http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/downloads/phylock.zip

PHYLock is an add-on software component for Win NT/2K/XP/2003/x64 that
enables Image for Windows to maintain a consistent backup of an
unlocked partition or volume. See the readme.txt file in the zip for
more information.

Haven't tried it myself, because I use a commercial product, so the
above is speculative. Would appreciate confirmation from anyone hwo
has tried it.

What exactly did you do? A normal Thunderbird install puts the
program in your Program Files and creates a new profile somewhere in
your "Documents and Settings" tree. It doesn't touch any other
files/folders on your computer.

Did you try to import your OE settings? Anything else?

Wald
