MovieMaker abnormal termination when importing a file

This is with MovieMaker ver 5.1 on XP Pro SP2.

I have a 680 meg MPEG file that plays correctly in WMP. (It was created by
converting a .dvr-ms file).

When I drag-n-drop the .mpg file into MovieMaker, it gives the following
error:

Runtime error
Program c:\Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe
This application requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Pleas contact the application's support team for more information

That is this forum, right? :)

Trying to use Windows Media Encoder ver 9.00.00.2980 also results in similar
error.

Any idea how to fix this?

Both the mpg and dvr-ms files display fine in the various media players
(WMP, Real etc).

How do I best handle dvr-ms files (captured off my ATI HDTV Wonder ASTC
card)?

Thanks. I looked there and saw the other 3rd party software needed to work
with MPG files in MM2

However, "abnormal termination" is a pretty sloppy way for any application
to handle such things. I wish MS had trapped for such simple things and
provided an intelligible error message.

I have Sonic/Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 installed. I used Videowave form
there to convert the file to WMV.

What about handling dvr-ms files directly? This format is used by MS in
their MCE. Does MS provide any utilities to convert dvr-ms files?

I could not find any section on your site on dvr-ms format files..

Thanks.
