movie maker locks up

when I edit video and attempt to "make" a movie, movie maker locks up and
stops responding. I have to close the program via task mgr to exit. It also
leaves an image on desktop saying "save movie file...Ctrl+P". I have to do a
reboot to clear this from my desktop.
I am running win xp pro sp2 on a "new" custom built system. 2.67 gigahertz
Intel Core2 Quad Q9450
64 kilobyte primary memory cache
can anyone help please

John thank you for your help. I've looked into all of your suggestions.
Unfortunately, most of them are beyond my computing experience to be of help.
I wish this were'nt the case. Was hoping there might have been a solution
that a relative novice could handle. Again, thank you for the time and effort.

Barry - having exact problem - did u find the solution? If so, what was it?

I have had this problem for some time. Various functions leave a long
highlight streak even after exiting MM. Have to reboot top get rid of them.
Did anybody figure it out?
